Meet the Consultant for the Scouting Mission to Turkey

For our upcoming Scouting Mission to Turkey, we are working with the owner and founder of Istanbul-based rights agency, AnatoliaLit, Amy Spangler.  Ms. Spangler is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College, with a B.A. in Near Eastern and Classical Archaeology and German Language and Literature. After four years as rights and acquisitions manager and editor for the Istanbul-based publisher Çitlembik, Spangler left her position to found AnatoliaLit, together with Dilek Akdemir, in 2005. In addition to being an agent, Ms. Spangler is also a translator from Turkish to English. Her published translations include The City in Crimson Cloak by Asli Erdogan (Soft Skull, 2007) and One Midday in Yenişehir by Sevgi Soysal (Milet, 2014). Export Market Webinar Recap: Exporting to Finland

In September, we hosted our Exporting to Finland webinar, presented by Dr. Iris Schwanck, Director of the Finnish Literature Exchange (FILI). A book market including 5,836 operating publishers with over 10,000 new titles produced each year places Finland in the leading position in Europe for number of books published per capita. Of those titles published, 20% are translations (60-70% of those are translations from English). The Finns are also avid readers, one in every 6 Finns aged 15-79 buys at least 10 books a year.  As Director of FILI, Dr. Schwanck also discussed her organization’s administration of translation grants to Finnish publishers who buy foreign rights, as well as Finland's role as the upcoming Guest of Honour at the 2014 Frankfurt Book Fair. Check out our blog post that recaps the webinar. If you missed this webinar and would like to know more about the lively Finnish book market, the video will be available on our website in December.

Another Great Fair in Beijing

It was another busy year for exhibitors on the Canada Stand at the 2014 Beijing International Book Fair as the fair is continuing to attract an increasingly global audience. The Stand hosted five Canadian publishers and attracted a number of Chinese trading partners. Visitors to the Stand eagerly collected the promotional tools made available by Livres Canada Books, including a Mandarin-English directory of Canadian publishers at the fair and the fall 2014 Rights Canada catalogue. Even publishers who were not able to attend the fair in person had the opportunity to benefit and increase from Chinese interest via our pay-per-title option.
