Selling Canadian Books Into Japan by Robin Birtle is now available. Learn about the Japanese book market and opportunities in Japan for Canadian publishers.
 
Distribution and Sales in the US: Part 1 by Michael Johnson is also available. This guide is the first part of a three-guide report. Part 1 acts as an overview of the book distribution and sales marketplace in the United States.

Rights Canada Catalogue Available this week

The Rights Canada catalogue will be distributed to our network of over 10,000 foreign rights buyers this week. We look forward to displaying the Spring 2014 edition, which includes 68 titles from 28 publishers, at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and the London Book Fair. Check our website this week for a PDF download of the catalogue. Thanks to all those who submitted a title to Rights Canada.

Canadian Studies Flyers In Production

The 2014 edition of the Canadian Studies Flyers is currently in production and will be available at the end of March. Flyers will be available in print at the London Book Fair. This year, the flyers included 96 titles from 31 publishers. Thanks to all those who submitted titles and we look forward to promoting your books throughout the year.

Consolidated Shipping for London

Livres Canada Books is organizing a combined shipment to the 2014 London Book Fair for publishers with shipments weighing less than 100 kg exclusively through Panalpina’s Toronto warehouse only. The deadline to be part of this shipment is March 17, 2014.

Receptions at the London Book Fair

The Canadian High Commission in London is once again organizing a reception for publishers, to be held on Monday, April 7, at 7:00 p.m. at the Official Residence of the High Commissioner, Gordon Campbell. Private invitations will be sent shortly.
 
Invitations have been sent out by email for the reception, hosted by Livres Canada Books on Tuesday, April 8, at 5:30 p.m. on the Canada Stand, F500. The reception has been graciously sponsored by the Ontario Media Development Corporation.
 

Registration for Beijing Is Now Open

Registration for the Canada Stand at the 2014 Beijing International Book Fair (August 27 to 31, 2014) is now open. The 2013 stand was busier than ever and attracted a number of potential Chinese partners. Livres Canada Books supports publishers on the stand by providing an interpreter, and promotional tools, including a Mandarin-English directory of Canadian exhibitors at the Fair and the Rights Canada catalogue. The exhibitor package also includes the services of a Chinese-language and cultural advisor who will provide publishers with an analysis of the potential of their titles for the Chinese market, assistance in scheduling meetings with Chinese colleagues before the fair, and translation into Mandarin of the “sell sheets” for 2 titles.
 
A pay-per-title option is available for publishers who are not at the fair in person. The deadline to register is Monday, March 10, 2014.

Frankfurt Book Fair: Reserve your Space!

The Canada Stand is rapidly filling up for the 2014 Frankfurt Book Fair but there are still some spots available. Space is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Book early for the best spot. Prices start at $1,900 for the pied-à-terre option and $3,345 for a 2 × 2 m stand.

The application deadline for FRMAP and the Mentoring - Funding Support program for 2014-15 is April 1, 2014. Application guidelines and forms for both programs are available on our website.

ADDENDA 2014-2015 FRMAP Guidelines


Deadline to submit a claim under FRMAP 2014-15
We consider your claim to be submitted on time if the printed and signed version of the claim form and all required documents are sent to Livres Canada Books by mail or courier, and are postmarked no later than thirty (30) calendar days after the event or export sales trip for which the claim is made. In the event where the claim is sent by email or facsimile, it must be received by Livres Canada Books no later than thirty (30) calendar days after the event or export sales trip for which the claim is made.

Maximum Number of Delegates per Event – Effective June 1st, 2014
Given the unexpected volume of claims in 2013-2014, for all events or export sales trips beginning June 1, 2014 and, until March 31, 2015, Livres Canada Books has changed the maximum number of delegates per event or export sales trip to 2 instead of 4 for which a recipient can claim.
 
In order to facilitate the transition for the revised 2014-2015 guidelines, Livres Canada Books will allow recipients to claim up to 4 delegates for events or export sales trips beginning April 1, 2014 until May 31, 2014.
 
Livres Canada Books apologizes for any inconvenience these changes may cause you.
 

Submit Your 2013-14 FRMAP Claims by April 14, 2014

Publishers eligible for FRMAP in 2013-14 are asked to submit claims for events and export sales trips taking place up to March 31, 2014 no later than Friday, April 14, 2014. Your cooperation is essential in helping us disburse contribution payments as soon as possible after the end of the financial year.
 

2013-14 Mentoring - Funding Support Final Reports Due May 2, 2014

The deadline to submit final reports for the Mentoring - Funding Support Program for 2013-14 is Friday, May 2, 2014. Guidelines and forms are available on our website.

Congratulations to the Nominees of the Melva J. Dwyer Award!

Douglas & McIntyre, the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Online Art Books, Art Canada Institute, the University of Toronto Press, the University of Calgary Press, the University of British Columbia Press, and McGill-Queen’s University Press have all been nominated for the Melva J. Dwyer Award, which honours reference materials relating to Canadian art and architecture.

Canadian book receives Ragazzi award

Le Noël de Marguerite by India Desjardins and Pascal Blanchet, published by La Pastèque has received the Ragazzi award for best children’s book in the fiction category at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. The Bologna Ragazzi Award is one of the most prestigious awards in the children’s book publishing. This is the first time in 51 years that a Canadian publisher has won an award in this category. Congratulations, La Pastèque!
