Mayor Annise Parker supports Astrodome repurposing; endorses Proposition 2

The effort to save our Astrodome got a big boost today when Houston Mayor Annise Parker released a statement endorsing Proposition 2 and the repurposing of the Astrodome.

"I'm proud to support The New Dome PAC and the effort to repurpose the Astrodome, Houston's 8th Wonder of the World. This plan will bring jobs, a positive economic impact and a renewed sense of pride in the Dome for all Houstonians. Join me and vote FOR Proposition 2 - The Dome is our history and our future." - Annise Parker, Mayor of Houston

Harris County voters are being asked to approve Proposition 2, which would authorize the sale of $217 million in bonds to create a special events and exhibition facility in the Dome. If passed, Proposition 2 would raise taxes by $8 for a typical $200,000 home. County officials have indicated that if the bond issue is not approved, the Astrodome will be demolished. Early voting begins on Monday, October 21; Election Day is Tuesday, November 5.

Preservation Houston members will have the opportunity to hear more about the Dome project during PH's Annual Meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, at The Houston Club atop One Shell Plaza, 910 Louisiana. Kevin Hoffman, executive deputy director of the Harris County Sports & Convention Corp. will be the guest speaker. Please reply to rsvp@preservationhouston.org if you plan to attend the meeting.

Preservation Houston and a coalition of preservation-minded organizations, including the National Trust, Houston Mod, American Institute of Architects Houston Chapter, and Houston Arts & Media, are cooperating on an educational effort to inform Harris County residents about the impact their votes will have on the future of the Astrodome.

Preservation Houston has advocated repurposing the world’s first domed stadium since 2001, when Preservation Houston (as Greater Houston Preservation Alliance) requested the determination that found the Astrodome is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark. Preservation Houston formed its Save Our Astrodome Committee in 2008.
