Faith 5

Hi everyone! Bored at home yet...? We are starting to feel it. Needing to find ways to pass the time and not drive on each other's nerves....

This Weeks Topic
Today we look at praying. Praying as a family can set kids up for a continued prayer life. Prayer can help strengthen a family together. The old saying goes, "A family that prays together, stays together." Faith 5 suggests that you pray for each others highs and lows. Give thanks for the good parts of life! And join together in prayer and support of the not so good parts. It communicates to kids and parents alike that they are not alone in their struggles.
"Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.
From the end of the earth I call to you, when my heart is faint."
~ Psalm 61:1-2 ~

Questions to ponder and make you scratch your head
  • What happens when people pray?
  • How does prayer change the situation?
  • How does prayer change you?
  • What happens to children who grow up with their highs and lows brought to God in prayer every night of their lives?
  • What happens to children who grow up praying for their parents?

Video Links...grab the popcorn
There are two videos in this link. I'd suggest at least watching the first one, and then the second one if you are ambitious.

Deep Thoughts... or at least thoughts anyways.
What are your biggest fears? What makes you anxious? What makes you sad?     What about for your kids?

What happens when we offer our struggles and joys to God and to each other? I find that they begin to look smaller. We have a God who is powerful and all-loving. When we offer our prayers to God, our fears and anxiety don't seem quite so big.

What happens when you laugh together? That joy, that laughter, it grows. Joy, laughter, and happiness are can spread and be shared with others. The way that we share with our kids, shapes our kids.

Alright, tips for praying. Faith 5 suggests praying to our highs and lows, and that is great. I find that it can also be good to have something that you pray together every night to set a routine to your night. Maybe it is a prayer that you said as a child. Maybe the Lord's Prayer. Maybe something you have found in a devotional or out on Google. Repetition ingrains it in who we are. Below I've shared a favorite of my families.

God, my friend, it is time for bed.
Time to rest my sleepy head.
I pray to you before I do.
Please guide me down the path that’s true.
God, my friend, please bless my mother;
All your children – sisters, brothers.
Oh! And then there’s daddy, too.
All a gift from you.
God, my friend, it is time to sleep.
I thank you for my soul unique.
And thank you for another day
to run and jump and laugh and play.
God, my friend, it is time to go,
but before I do, I hope you know.
I am thankful for my blessing too.
And God, my friend, I love you.

Homework is even good for adults
Once again we add to our routine of the night. I hope that your family is figuring out what works for you. Each family is different, and you know your family the best. I'd spend extra time this week exploring ideas for prayer. Below are  scripture readings once again for each day.

Sunday - Psalm 61:1-2 Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the end of the earth I call to you, when my heart is faint.

Monday - 1 Thess. 5:16-18  Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Tuesday - 1 Peter 5:7  Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.

Wednesday -  Philippians 4:8  Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Thursday - Luke 11:9  So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.

Friday -   James 5:13  Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise.

Saturday - Your favorite verse of the week.
