Dr. Bob Gould Speaks On the Potential Health Dangers of Fracking

On February 7th, Physicians for Social Responsibility Board President Dr. Bob Gould took the stage at the March for Real Climate Leadership in Oakland to speak out about the health risks of fracking. Together with Barb Sattler from the Alliance of Nurses of Healthy Environments (ANHE). Dr. Gould spoke to a crowd of over 8,000 people, in one of the largest anti-fracking demonstrations in US history. They cautioned against the increase in fracking throughout California, and the threat this poses to water supplies, air quality and a potential increase in related health risks.

This wasn’t the first time that Dr. Gould and Ms. Sattler have been vocal about this issue in 2015. In January, they joined together to present a well-attended webinar that addressed not just specific health risks associated with fracking, but also the dangers for the environment and worsening global warming. While fracking presents these challenges anywhere, the situation is unique in California, as the state has no “setback” requirements, which would provide at least a minimum of protections for schools, daycare centers and health care facilities in areas of ongoing, and potential siting of oil and gas operations slated to be increased by hydraulic fracturing and other enhanced “well-stimulation” techniques.

Please contact us if you’d like to become involved with the growing movement of health professionals advocating for a moratorium on fracking operations in California.

Healthy Food in Health Care Makes Strides in 2014

One of the centerpiece programs of Physicians for Social Responsibility, Healthy Food in Health Care, finished the year with an impressive list of accomplishments, and energy to move forward in 2015. Senior Program Associate Kendra Klein has been working with providers and vendors to ensure that everyone’s health care experience can supported as much as possible with healthy, sustainable food. In 2014, this work has included:
  • Working with 64 hospitals on Food Day as they served their meals without meats grown with the routine use of antibiotics. These hospitals joined hundreds of others nationwide to create a $53 million demand for healthier, sustainable meat.
  • Collaborating with Kaiser-Permanente to help develop tools for hospitals to identify and support food vendors who provide more sustainable options.
  • Joining with the Community Alliance of Family Farmers to create Farm Fresh Healthcare Project. The project produced a How-To Guide (find the PDF here) which shares the lessons learned from eleven facilities which had successful local purchasing initiatives that supported local farms and provided healthy menus for their patients.
The Healthy Food in Health Care program will continue these efforts throughout 2015. This work will include a presentation at the California Academy of Dietetics Annual Conference in Riverside, California on April-11. Kendra Klein will be presenting a workshop, Putting Sustainability on the Menu.  This workshop will be presented along with Patti Oliver, Director of Food and Nutrition Services, UCLA Medical Center.

Cost of Nuclear Weapons Webinar -- Join Us!

The San Francisco Bay Area Physicians for Social Responsibility is pleased to share this information about a webinar from National PSR’s Security Program’s to learn more about nuclear weapons spending in the 2016 budget. Yes, the 2016 (not 1986) budget.

Nuclear weapons should be slated for oblivion according to President Obama’s 2009 Prague speech, in which he said, “We seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons.” Most of the world also thinks that these weapons should go: Last October at the United Nations, a whopping 155 nations called for the total elimination of nuclear weapons.

Nevertheless, the Obama administration is planning to spend over $12 billion in 2016 on our nuclear arsenal, even though these weapons do nothing to keep us safe from the security threats we face today posed by unfolding climate change, disease outbreaks such as Ebola, and terrorism emanating from states and non-state actors. Obama’s proposal is the tip of the iceberg of a much larger plan to spend $348 billion over the next 10 years to maintain and modernize America’s lethal nuclear arsenal.

The webinar on Wednesday, February 25 at 8:00 PM EST. You can Join PSR’s webinar to learn more about the budget and what you can do, as a taxpayer, to change the way our money is spent.

We are also pleased to present National PSR President Lynn Ringenberg's terrific Op-Ed on the continued dangers nuclear weapons programs and PSR's related Humanitarian Impacts of Nuclear Weapons Campaign which was featured on the CNN website on January 23, 2015.

Take Action to Regulate Methane!

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is emitted when coal, natural gas, and oil are produced and transported.  Up until now, methane has been largely unregulated, but that may soon change. On January 14, President Obama’s administration announced a goal of reducing methane emissions produced by the energy industry by up to 45 percent by 2025.
PSR has spoken out in favor of an aggressive plan to regulate methane. Now is the time to have your voice heard, and to ensure that the Administration’s plan moves forward! Help guarantee that the Obama Administration’s aspirations for methane and greenhouse gas reduction become realities.  Click here to tell the President you want to see his plan for reducing methane emissions to protect health and the environment now!
