Dear <<First Name>>

Welcome to our latest newsletter - as ever, you'll find within it lots of links, blogs, news stories, and and a podcast or two, which I hope you like!

WHERE TO FIND ME! HOW TO HEAR ME!

  • I'm pleased to be delivering another session on Developing a Small Charity Fundraising Strategy for Small Charities Coalition on 17 September. Now in their fourth year, these sessions always sell out, so get your tickets now.
  • I'm excited and proud to be on the team organising the fourth Hertfordshire Funding Network (TFN Herts) on 8 October. We're open for charity applications now, and tickets are already on sale - all details here.
  • I was excited to be interviewed by Kenneth from the Do More Good podcast team, and the episode (iTunes) dropped last month! Or check it out here (Spotify)! We covered mentoring, embracing vulnerability, the beauty of parkrun, my thoughts on the future of the charity sector, and more.
  • I also feature briefly as a "randomer" on Simon Scriver's #ioffc special podcast - on Spotify and itunes, among some more interesting people.

MY QUICK READS - ACROSS THE SECTOR

There's been so much interesting and important writing about charities over the last month. Here's a flavour of it.

On diversity in the sector
The NCVO also announced the appointment of Karl Wilding as its next Chief Executive. I liked these articles by Kirsty Weakley and Elizabeth Balgobin written in response to the news. Following the publication of Should White Men Step Aside? Ruby Bayley-Pratt wrote an excellent Twitter thread on her thoughts, and Chloe Green wrote It’s time for us to recognise the barriers that BAME people face in the charity sector.

On fundraising
Some Of The Most Important Things In #Fundraising Don’t Feel Like Fundraising - Simon Scriver
Fundraising Innovation – Finding the Sweet Spot with your entire organisation - Ellen Janssens
Beyond the tactics: the fundamentals of delivering a positive supporter experience - Rachel Hunnybun
What does fundraising ethically even mean? - Ruby Bayley-Pratt
Three things your donation page just has to have - Matt Collins
Asking on the first meeting: good practice, or scandalously impolite? - Shaun Horan
Understanding the emotional journey of fundraising - Dr Beth Breeze
And Lizzi Hollis put together an excellent list of fundraising resources

On charity communications
How to Improve Nonprofit Fundraising Copy: Branding! - Claire Axelrad

On governance
The Charity Commission's report on Oxfam: Lessons for trustees and what you can do - Elizabeth Chamberlain

The NCVO published its UK Civil Society Almanac with all the stats you might want about charity income. Here is a good introductory blog, and some cogent analysis from Grahame Darnell

And here are some of the recent posts from my own charity blog:

"You'd have thought I'd worked it out by now. How could somewhere so familiar still confuse me so much? Why do I keep choosing consecutive sessions six floors apart? Who was Frobisher anyway?" Read more

"Day 2 at the Fundraising Convention was once again for me all about getting out of my bubble and trying to see people I hadn't seen recently if at all, and who (gasp!) I might not even know from Twitter. How did I get on?" Read more

"Fundraisers already work really hard; managers can’t go to their teams and ask them to double their efforts. But could we perhaps ask them if they could do 1% more, or 1% better?" Read more

LET'S STAY IN TOUCH

That's all for now. Do give me a call or drop me a line if you would like to meet up, or find me on Twitter!

With best wishes,

Richard Sved
