April News

It's Autism Awareness Month and we have so much planned! First, if you didn't see it on Facebook, check out our very own Autism Society of Texas filter for your profile picture on social media!  Throughout April we're excited to promote not only awareness, but also acceptance, for everyone affected by autism. We have many events happening, including City Proclamations declaring Autism Awareness Month, fundraisers at Chuy's, Kendra Scott, Cookie Cutters Hair Cuts for Kids, and Charming Charlie, as well as Texas Autism Advocacy Day, community events, special hours at The Thinkery, a free ABA training workshop,  Autism Awareness Month toolkits, and our open house & photo contest display.
Texas Autism Advocacy Day: Wednesday, April 12th
Please join the Autism Society of Texas and other nonprofit groups, stakeholders, parents, and concerned advocates, as we come together to advocate for the needs of  children and adults with autism, and their families. We'll hear from special guests, learn about issues, then make legislative office visits in the afternoon followed by a press conference. Please register here for this free event. We would love to have a large number of attendees, and no advocacy experience is necessary to attend.
April Volunteer of the Month: Jennifer Miller
We are so thankful for our volunteers! Jennifer has been a long time volunteer at the Autism Society of Texas. She has been essential in media and marketing outreach for countless events over the last few years. Jennifer has also coordinated our Friends and Family Happy Hour group for years and has been a resource for parents all over Central Texas. Jennifer currently serves on our Development Committee. We are extremely grateful for her support and her willingness to jump in and lend a hand when needed! Thank you, Jennifer!
Announcing our Talent Show!
Join us at our Autism Society of Texas Talent Show! This is an all ages and all talents event taking place on May 5th, 2017 at the Southwest YMCA. To participate, please complete the application on our website
Texas Autism Bike Ride & Fun Run: Thank You
We can't thank everyone enough for their support of our Texas Autism Bike Ride & Fun RunAlthough the weather didn't cooperate, we enjoyed the indoor Resource Fair, free food, and kids activities. For those who didn't make it out, we'll be sending a message this week on how you can collect participant tees, jerseys, and other incentives. A huge THANK YOU to all of our sponsors!
"Give Me a Place to Stand": We Have A Winner!
I took this photo at my child's school.  He was running down the hallway playing and I managed to capture the light of the setting sun spilling in to the window. For me, this photo represents our journey forward and our hopes of light at the end of the tunnel.

Congratulations to Michelle Salinas, who is our first place winner! (Photo & Michelle's comments above). Our second place winner is Ricardo Recio Jr. See all the photo entries at our Open House on April 20th and look out for them on our social media pages. Please share them and help us spread awareness and acceptance. Thank you!

Are you looking to spread awareness and acceptance during National Autism Awareness Month? We've put together some great ways to get involved and help celebrate throughout the month of April! We have a toolkit for families and community, as well as a school toolkit! Check them out here.
