Talk of the Town News

3 September 2021

We’re back!

We’re back from a lovely break in fantastic weather and ready to get to work.

Here’s this week’s news and what’s coming up in September.

Artisan Market tomorrow

The Artisan Market is back tomorrow from 11am to 3pm in Market Place.

One of the traders will be Purple Earth who are based in Whitehead and sell a range of eco-friendly products from food to cleaning products. They also sell online and delivery locally if you can’t make the market.

Music in The Courtyard Garden

The Gasworks Trad group will be back with us on 11 September in the Courtyard Garden from 2-4pm. Looking forward to seeing you then.

And if you’re a local musician and would like to play in the garden, we’d love to hear from you.

Sails and Tales Maritime Exhibition

Have you been to our maritime exhibition, Sails and Tales?

We developed it with people who took part in our online chats sharing harbour memories earlier this year during lockdown.

We’ve just created some new postcards to help market the exhibition. Ian McKenzie has produced this lovely design for us, which we are delighted with! :-)

If your business or premises is interested in taking some postcards and helping us tell people about it, drop me an email and we’ll get some to you asap.

The exhibition will also be part of a tour organised by the Townscape Heritage Initiative for European Heritage Open Day on 11th September.

Of course, you can pop in any time Robinson’s Shoes are open. There’s more info on our website.

We also recently crowdfunded £370 to pay for a virtual reality recording of the exhibition that we will add to our website. The company from Whitehead were recording this morning.

We’ll let you know when it goes live on our website and you can share with friends and family abroad as well as those with mobility issues who might not be able to use the stairs.

Facebook group

I put a post on the Positive Carrickfergus Facebook group last night. If you missed it, here’s the update.

We aren't planning to post or open up this page any time soon. It was a great place to start connecting with people who were already doing great work in the town and with people who want to focus on the positives about living here.

The purpose of this work was always to build community. The extent to which you can do that on social media is limited. We're going to focus on developing 'real life' connections in our shop and are communicating regularly in a newsletter which, in the last few weeks, has included updates on our work and events, jobs offered by Mencap and Ryobi, the reopening of Flame Gasworks Museum and Council organised events.

If you'd like us to share your news or add your event to our events calendar, drop me a line to

Thanks to everyone who has supported us and got involved so far. Time for a new chapter.

Talk of the Town Book club

We have chosen our next book club read which is Fractured: Why our societies are coming apart and how we put them back together again by Jon Yates.

We’ll be meeting on 30th September at 7pm to discuss the book and everyone is welcome, even if you haven’t read it.

Do us a favour and forward this newsletter to your friends and family if you think they’ll find it useful.

If you’d like us to include your group or event in our newsletters, reply to this email with some information and we’ll do what we can to get the word out.

Bye for now,
