Talk of the Town News

20 August 2021

We’re on our hols!

Lynn and I are both taking next week off so the shop will be closed until 1 September.

It’s been quite a wonderful whirlwind since we opened and we’re both ready for a break so that we can come back refreshed for lots of fun in September.

In September we’ll be doing some more walking tours of the town and then coming together to make ‘maps’ or collages that describe our experiences of living in the town and our desires for the future.

We’ll also continue to explore how we can bring about some of the wildest dreams that people have share with us on their postcards.

And I’m cooking up a project that we’ll need your help with - and we’ll be asking you to get your friends involved too….

Music in The Courtyard Garden

We had such a fabulous time in the Courtyard Garden last Saturday with the The Gasworks Traditional Music Society and The Flame N’Ukes. It was sunny and warm, and the craic was ninety.

The Gasworks group will be back with us on 11 September from 2-4pm so if you missed last Saturday, do join us on the 11th .

And if you’re a local musician and would like to play in the garden, we’d love to hear from you.

How would you like to use the Talking Shop?

While we’re away, we’d love you to have a think about what you’d like to use our Talking Shop for.

We’d always planned to make the Talking Shop a community space that different groups could use and that’s starting to happen with Carrick Sing who continue to meet on Tuesdays from 3-4pm and 7-8pm in the garden.

We’re also hosting a group of crocheters once a week who used to meet in the shop when it was a wool shop. They were disappointed to emerge from lockdown and discover their regular meeting place had gone but we are delighted that they are using the space to do something they love and spend time together.

We’ve also been asked to host a conversation about veganism later in the year so if you’re interested in taking part in that, let me know.

Have a think about what you could do in our shop and we’ll try our best to accommodate you. We really want this space to be for everyone.

Mid and East Antrim Council Events and Support

Third Carrick Band are playing in Marine Gardens from 3-4pm on Sunday 24th August and there’s a pop up play day on Tuesday at 11am in North Street.

The council are running a pop up shop in Carrick and have a pre-mentoring retail programme open for applications to arts, craft, food and fashion business start-ups who might like the opportunity to test-trade in the town centre. The closing date for applications is 30 August.

Talk of the Town Book club

We have chosen our next book club read which is Fractured: Why our societies are coming apart and how we put them back together again by Jon Yates.

We’ll be meeting on 30th September at 7pm to discuss the book and everyone is welcome, even if you haven’t read it.

Our Facebook page is still paused so please forward this newsletter to your friends and family.

If you’d like us to include your group or event in our newsletters, reply to this email with some information and we’ll do what we can to get the word out.

See you in September!
