Dairyland and NuScale Power Announce MOU
Dairyland and NuScale Power have announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to evaluate the potential deployment of NuScale’s advanced nuclear technology.
Under this MOU, the two parties will work together to explore NuScale’s small modular reactor technology and support Dairyland’s due diligence process in evaluating affordable, reliable and carbon-free energy solutions.
In support of Dairyland’s existing portfolio, NuScale’s VOYGRTM power plants are flexible and able to perform load following maneuvers to meet grid capacity needs due to the intermittency of wind, solar, and hydro generation, facilitating the growth of renewables. Additionally, NuScale’s technology is particularly well-suited for placement at retiring coal plant sites, preserving critical jobs in the energy industry and helping host communities facilitate the transition to a decarbonized energy system. Redevelopment & Reuse Study: Genoa Power Plant Site

Dairyland’s Genoa Site Redevelopment & Reuse Study was recently completed by Ady Advantage (Madison, Wis.). The project sought to identify optimal reuses of Dairyland’s retired Genoa Site, focused on the overall vitality of the Genoa area community while aligning with Dairyland’s continued operational needs at the site.
The study identified approximately 45 acres of land at the Genoa Site that will be available for industrial redevelopment. Site assets include: Mississippi River access, highway access and well-maintained barge docking facilities. Following a thorough exploration of scenarios that aligned with project goals and site assets, barge transportation, transloading operations and light manufacturing/ assembly emerged as the top-three reuse options.
To continue due diligence, Dairyland plans to issue a Request for Expression of Interest in the site to barge fleeting and transload operators from across the Midwest to gain further, non-binding, insights into potential interest in reuse of the site. This work will go forward in tandem with the continued decommissioning and dismantlement of the plant itself which will continue through 2023.
To inquire regarding site redevelopment opportunities, please contact Jenny Radcliffe, Senior Economic Development Specialist.

Heartland Power Cooperative Partners with Valent BioSciences on Osage Facility Environmental Initiatives
Valent BioSciences LLC (Osage, Iowa) recently announced that it is undertaking two major environmental initiatives at its biorational manufacturing facility in Osage, Iowa. They include a new prairie restoration project and solar field.
Prairie Restoration Project
Valent BioSciences is restoring 34 acres of highly diverse native prairie on its land in Mitchell County, Iowa, which will be accessible to the public. This project will help establish and support a diverse native habitat for birds, butterflies, insects, reptiles, and small wildlife. At maturation, the prairie will sequester approximately 170 tons of carbon dioxide annually.
Solar Field
The 1.5-megawatt alternating current (AC) solar field will be constructed on 12 acres of Valent BioSciences land adjacent to the prairie restoration project in conjunction with its partners, OneEnergy Renewables and Heartland Power Cooperative. This field will include approximately 3,700 bifacial solar panels. This project ensures that renewable energy will help power the Valent BioSciences facility. Click here to read more.
