THE SOUTH Australian dairy industry is set to benefit with a $120,000 expansion of the Dairy Farm Strategic Review program in 2017.

The program is a joint initiative between DairySA, the SA Dairy Industry Fund and Primary Industries and Regions SA developed and implemented by Rural Business Support to help dairyfarmers establish and engage business plans for their future. It follows a $300,000 SA Government-funded pilot program held in 2016.

Rural Business Support chief executive officer Brett Smith says following the success of the pilot program, registrations are now open for another 30 dairy families to participate in the review.

“We had great success with the pilot program, with dairyfarmers involved saying it was a great way to evaluate and set out specific and tailored plans, providing those involved with goals, deadlines and the confidence to move forward,” Mr Smith said.

“The program provides on-farm support at the kitchen table to help dairy family businesses to identify and adopt proven practices in business and production to improve profitability and productivity.

“The fundamental questions: ‘Where are we? Where are we going? How do we get there? How much will it cost? Will the bank support us? Who will help us?’ will all be addressed. The program will help each family business develop a business and finance strategic action plan.”

SA Dairyfarmers’ Association President John Hunt was part of the development of the program and says “as a participant in the pilot program, I recommend this to all dairy families”. Also, an independent survey conducted by EconSearch confirmed that dairy families, dairy industry leaders and bankers believed the program is of great economic and personal value.

Program participants will attend a strategic workshop followed by three on-farm visits by a farm business specialist. New web tools linked to DairyBase will be used to review the business and identify opportunities for improvement.

A strategic workshop will be held in the Central region in Hahndorf on Monday, February 27, for 15 families. Another strategic workshop will be held at Mount Gambier in the Lower South East region on Tuesday, February 28, for a further 15 families. Farm visits will then be held from March to June.

The Farm Business Strategic Review has been developed by RBS and funded by Primary Industries and Regions SA. RBS acknowledges the support of the dairy industry at a state and national level.
