Young Guns competition offers industry recognition

Young people in the sheep industry will get an extra chance to win at this year’s LambEx 2016 – with the LambEx 2016 Young Gun Competition extended until Tuesday, June 14.

The event, sponsored by the Australian White Suffolk Association, encourages high school students to those starting out in the workforce to share their ideas and interest in the sheep and lamb industry.

The three competition categories include high school or undergraduate students; Honours, Masters or PhD students; and early career professionals (up to 30 years old as of August 10, 2016).

Twelve finalists – four from each of the three sectors – will receive free admission to LambEx 2016, and get the chance to win a $400 prize.

Convenor Tracy Lamb said it was a one-off extension.

“We’ve had great interest from across industry, with entries flowing in,” she said.

“But, due to the season break with many young producers and consultants busy sowing, and a few requests, we’ve decided to extend the closing date to ensure everyone has an equal chance to enter.

“So for those of you who haven’t yet entered, I’d encourage you to make sure you send your entries in now.”

Former 2014 Young Guns winner in the Honours, MSc, PhD section, Caris Jones, Armidale, New South Wales, encouraged potential applicants to enter.

“For anyone hesitant to enter, I would really encourage them to give it a go,” she said.

“It has helped me so much from a networking perspective, being able to meet people already established within the sheep and lamb industry to meeting the other finalists.”

Entries are now open, and close on 11.59PM AEST Tuesday, June 14, 2016.
