Ahoy!

There are many great things happening with Jenkins X. At times, we all feel it is moving too fast, but this is a great thing! I want to remind you there is a GitHub project where we track work items and it is accessible to you. Please take a look periodically to gain insight into what is being prioritized.

I'm honored to introduce you to one of our community leaders, Kara de la Marck, who recently joined CloudBees. Kara has years of development experience and has been involved in well-known projects such as Babel, Pandas and Jaeger. Together, we plan to strengthen our Jenkins X community and will look to you, our members, to help us do that. We both will be in San Francisco at DevOps World | Jenkins World in August. Hope to see you there!

CLI improvements

We've been listening to your feedback! Over the past few weeks, the core team has been focusing on improving the CLI experience and simplifying things.

One of the work items I'd like to bring to your attention is simplifying the UX of `jx create cluster / jx install` #3915, which aims to make sure your experience is flawless from the beginning. For example, if you need a quick cluster to check out features, perhaps we just ensure we have a "basic" setup and you don't need to worry about passing several flags to the CLI. If you have more ambitious goals, like to live on the edge, then the "advanced" flag may be for you.

Speaking of CLI improvements...now you can create a CLI Plugin for JX and share it

New documentation is available describing how to extend the Jenkins X CLI (we have additional content to publish soon). Perhaps you want to add functionality and really don't care for writing a separate CLI binary. You can write your plugin in any language, though Go seems to be the predominant one. :)

Jenkins X uses the Cobra CLI Framework, and for many good reasons. The framework helps take care of a lot of boilerplate, therefore I strongly recommend using it in your plugin.

Videos, videos and more videos

Seems like just yesterday we hosted a virtual summit - Continuous Delivery in a Cloud Native World. In case you missed it, I am happy to tell you many (if not all) videos are available in our new Jenkins X YouTube channel under this playlist.

Brand new Jenkins X YouTube channel

Our new Jenkins X YouTube channel will also contain all tutorial videos, which of course we will embed on the jenkins-x.io site. Please subscribe to the channel to stay up-to-date!

New look for Jenkins X

You might not have heard, but Jenkins X is getting a new look! This means coming up with the logo that embodies what Jenkins X is all about. We are asking for your feedback on this so please comment on this issue.

If you are going to KubeCon China this year, I'd love to meet. I'll also be giving a lightning talk on Jenkins X and Tekton Pipelines. Hope to see you there!

@SharePointOscar | Developer Advocate Jenkins X

Welcome Kara de la Marck!

Hi, I'm Kara de la Marck and I’m honored to have joined CloudBees this month, working with the Jenkins and Jenkins X open source communities.

My focus will be on supporting contributors and participants in both of these amazing and growing communities.

A little bit about me: I’ve worked as a developer for a Fortune 500 company, as a freelancer and for charities. I’ve been fortunate to be involved in a number of open source projects, including Babel, Jaeger and Pandas. Outside of work, I am an organizer and on the board of directors for codebar.io, which runs regular programming workshops for underrepresented groups in tech.

On a personal note, I …

  • Am a French-American living in London.
  • Grew up in Asia, Europe and the United States.
  • Love building and supporting welcoming and inclusive communities.
I’d love to find out more about your experiences with Jenkins X and hear your suggestions for improving our community. Please let me know:
  • What you are building with Jenkins X.
  • Your experiences as a contributor to Jenkins X.
  • What you don’t like and how we can improve.
  You can find me at:

I’m looking forward to getting to know the Jenkins and Jenkins X communities better and meeting more of you in person at  DevOps World | Jenkins World in San Francisco, California and Lisbon, Portugal. Please do come and say hi!
