June 2021 Newsletter

The Cybrarium is fully open! Welcome to the third newsletter from the Homestead Cybrarium. We're excited to share the latest news about programs and services offered to our community throughout June.

Featured Events

During June, the Cybrarium celebrates diversity, equity, and inclusion: Our community grows and benefits from the strength of our diversity, especially when we are inclusive of those that may be different.

This month we also begin our Summer Reading Program during which we will highlight and share these values in our virtual story times and in-person events, including an, "All Families Fun Night," scheduled for June 29th. We have also also started several new clubs for our patrons to join and engage across multiple areas of interest.

In the Community

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. has seen an increase in violence, discrimination, and harassment toward Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders nationwide.

To promote a message of tolerance, inclusion, and respect, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava recently launched a "We Are One Miami-Dade” campaign. The Cybrarium continues to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout all of our programs and services, including serving many who are homeless or have a disability.

The Cybrarium is proud to be the new home of the Lamplighters Writing Group. The Lamplighters are a group of talented and aspiring writers with a flexible and dedicated membership. Meetings will be held the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month from 4 PM to 6 PM.

Collection Highlight

All Different Now by Angela Johnson

In her book, Johnson tells a tale of Juneteenth in Texas through the eyes of a child, while Lewis’ earth-toned watercolor illustrations capture the quotidian aspects of the way of life emancipation ended.

The young female speaker who lives and works on the plantation with her mother, siblings and others takes personally the titular phrase, “all different now,” when freedom comes. Just before the Union general announces on the balcony of the big house that the slaves are “now and forever free,” rumors of this news has spread so quickly from the port to the countryside that Lewis includes an image with four vertical panels showing slaves engaged in many different types of work, passing the word and responding with surprise, shock and praise to the news.

The historical details that Lewis integrates into the images situate Johnson’s story historically and give young readers a sense of what cotton plantations in the mid-1860s looked like. In the backmatter, Johnson makes clear why this bit of history matters to her, and Lewis shares the impossibility of contemporary Americans’ reaching a true understanding of the lives of 19th-century slaves—but how important it is to try.
