Mid-Summer Newsletter

July 30, 2017

What have our Athletes Been Doing?

It's been a while since our last newsletter was published. In that time, there have been many things happening in the club. Training, participation in various meets, summer camp, closure of the indoor track for replacement, and running track meets, to name a few. Overal, it has been quite busy, but things have mainly slowed down as the outdoor season comes to an end.

We will soon be gearing up for our next seasons; the Cross Country season which begins in early September, and the Indoor Season also beginning in September for the older athletes, while our younger athletes start indoors in November. Information about these seasons will be coming in the next newsletter and will be available on our website in the next couple weeks.

Eight of our club members attended the Langley Pacific Invitational and the BC Masters Outdoor Championship that took place in Langley on the June 16-18 weekend. Jack Brow Memorial - Kelowna

BC Special Olympics

Hillside Stadium was the venue for the athletics portion of the 2017 BC Special Olympics. What a great event. This was an amazing group of athletes who showed great physical ability, effort, sportsmanship, and friendship. They were truly a group of athletes who loved what they were doing, their performances, and the achievements of their fellow athletes.
We had many comments from our officials about how enthusiastic and polite these athletes were. The medal ceremonies were especially amazing with the stands full of athletes and supporters, and all of them cheering wildly for those who received medals in their various events.

This was a meet that was fun to be at and to be part of. To read about the event in Kamloops, go to Many photos taken at Hillside Stadium can be found at

BC Junior Development Championship

This event was scheduled to take place in Kelowna during the July 14-16 weekend. Unfortunately, last minute changes had to occur because of the potential risks to these young athletes from the smoke caused by the wild fires in the province. As it turned out, the skies were relatively clear during that weekend, but the meet had already been changed to the Lower Mainland and put on by Ocean Athletics.

We had a few athletes who were planning to compete in Kelowna, but when the last-minute move was made, their plans fell apart. Hopefully next year the meet can take place in Kelowna, and many of our JD athletes will be able to attend.

2017 BC Championships Jamboree

Seven of our club athletes attended the Championships Jamboree in Coquitlam on the weekend of July 14-16, 2017. The Jamboree is the BC Championship meet for Midgets, Youth, Junior and Senior athletes in the province, and those attending from our club performed very well. Their results can be found at this link - KAML Jamboree Results.

Special congratulations to Bryson Wood for being selected to the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championship to be held in Brandon, MB from Aug. 11-13 this year. Bryson broke the provincial standards in Long Jump and Hammer Throw at the Jamboree and will be competing in the Long Jump, the 300m and possibly a relay at this National Meet. He is the first athletes our club has sent to a national meet in a long time.

Unfortunately, one of our Youth athletes was injured at this meet. While running in the final for the 110m Hurdles, Matthew Campmans hit the final hurdle in his race. Matthew completed the race, but the injury to his leg was season ending. We wish Matthew a speedy recovery and hope that he will be back with us, training for Track and Field, sometime during the next season.

North American Indigenous Games

Kiara and Mya Mack of Kamloops Track and Field Club competed at the Games (NAIG) in Toronto. The games took place from July 16-23.

Both girls represented our club well. Kiara (16 and under) took the silver medal in both the High Jump and the 4x400m Relay. She also achieved a bronze medal in the 4x100m Relay. Mya, competing in the 14-and-under, took fifth place in High Jump, Shot Put, and Discus Throw.

Congratulations to these girls who have been working hard over the past few seasons to prepare for this event.

On a related note, our throws coach and current Canadian Record holder in Shot Put, Dylan Armstrong, was selected as the Head Throws Coach for this event. Congratulations to Dylan for this selection to the Games.

National Championships for our Athletes

Bryson Woods' performance at the BC Championships Jamboree and other meets this year have earned him an invitation to the Legion Youth Nationals at a meet this summer in Brandon, Manitoba. Bryson will represent BC (and KAML) Long Jump and the 300m. He also hopes to join a relay team from BC at the meet.

Coach Shane Wiebe also competes as a Masters athletes. His performances this season have qualified him to compete in Weight Throw, Shot Put, Discus Throw and Javelin Throw at the Canadian Masters Outdoor Championships, also in August.
