KAML December Newsletter

December 4, 2016
Welcome to December. Isn't it amazing how quickly time goes by? It feels like we just started the Indoor season, and here it is getting close to Christmas.

Registration has gone pretty well. Coach Dayl has a large group of Track Rascal athletes (20) working out on Wednesday afternoons. Our JD group is quite large (28) and Coach Tara needs some help. This group is too large for one person to manage and provide solid coaching for, and although she has some help, more assistance is required. Please speak with her to offer your help when you bring your athletes to practice on Tuesday and Thursday. She will let you know how you can help.

Coaches Shane and Dylan have 20 registered athletes and some who have not registered yet. Please go online and register yourself right away. Any members who have not registered for this season will have their BC Athletics membership expire on Dec. 31, and will not be able to continue training with the club after that date.

Coach Ian, working with our Middle Distance group, has 9 registered athletes. The situation is the same for any of his athletes who have not yet registered for this season. You must get this done right away.

Registration information and the link to our online registration form is on our Club Registration page - http://kamtrack.ca/club-registration.html.

Schedule Changes and Upcoming Activities

There are some upcoming closures at TCC which will affect our workout days. TCC will be closed for the Fulton Cup Tournament from Dec. 14-16, so we will not have access to the track and most field events. Coaches will be providing their athletes with a complete schedule of what will happen on those days. Regardless, we do not have access to the gym floor, and most likely entrance to the facility due to this tournament. Please be sure to check with your coach prior to these days. Coaches should also be able to provide you with information about when training will stop for the Christmas break, and when activities will resume.

Thursday, Dec. 8 - JD and older coaches requested that we have an In-House Mini Meet for our athletes, and we feel that we can make this work for most folks. We also feel that we could do this a few times over the Indoor season, in order to help our athletes get "competition ready" for sanctioned meets that are upcoming.

These will hopefully create a social community between athletes, parents, and officials. We will be recording results from each meet, with the hope that these will help athletes, and also provide an opportunity for recognition within the club at a possible awards ceremony sometime in the year. Parents will be required to help us make this work, so please come to practice that day with your child and to indicate your willingness to assist in their growth.

The events that we are looking at are limited by the time we have available, and the numbers of athletes who might participate. At this point the proposal is as follows:
  • JD - 60m, Long Jump.
  • Shane/Dylan/Ian - 60m, 60m Hurdle, High Jump, a middle distance.
These events are not guaranteed, and we will be limited by the amount of time available to us.

Tuesday, Dec. 13 - With the gym not available on Dec. 14, we are working to put on a mini-meet for the Track Rascal group on Tuesday, Dec. 13. Coach Dayl will have information for you at your next practice, and the events we are planning for are 60m, Shot Put, and Long Jump. This will be the final day for this session for Track Rascals, so we hope that all children will be there to have a good time. We will bring in pizza for the end of this mini-meet. Hopefully, Coach Dayl will also let you know that there will be another Track Rascal session starting after the New Year from Jan.11 - Mar. 1, 2017.

Congratulations

On Saturday, November 5, quite a few of our Middle Distance athletes went to West Kelowna to compete at the BC High School Cross Country Championships. These athletes, representing their schools and our club, competed against athletes from around the province in the Junior (grades 9-10) and Senior (grades 11-12) categories and performed well.
  • Junior Boys (4.5 km) - Logan Hwang (Silver Medal) - 17:10, Trevor Laupland - 19:02.
  • Junior Girls (4.5 km) - Tegan Heshka 20:31, Maia Vitoratos  21:37.
  • Senior Boys (6.7 km) - Calum Carrigan  28:04, AJ Timewell  33:24.
Once again, congratulations to these athletes from our club. Hopefully, I haven't missed anyone. More information about the races and the course can be found by visiting the BC High School Cross Country Championships website which also contains a video of the course.
