Anniversary Races Coming

President's Message

This fall marks the anniversary for two important races hosted by BRRC.  The BRRC NCR Trail Marathon Planning Committee, led by Christy St. Clair, is busy at work preparing for the 25th running of our premier event, which will be held on November  29th.  Full information about the marathon, the two-person relay, and our inaugural 8K, can be found at the marathon website here

In the meantime, we will be celebrating the 35th Annual Executive Stampede this weekend, Sunday, September 14.  The race benefits our Charlie Reynolds Memorial Scholarship fund, which this year gave two scholarships to deserving student athletes.  The race features team competition but can be run by anyone, whether on a team or not.  Full information can be found here

Our Grand Prix Series, for which up to date standings can be found here, resumes later this month with the NCR Half Marathon, a flat fast course run entirely on the NCR Trail starting in Sparks.  See more here.

In August, we were reminded of runner safety when a member posted on our Facebook page a warning about a friend who was attacked while running near Patterson Park.  Please remember to always be aware of your surroundings when you run, run with a partner if you can, and follow all rules of the road.  As a reminder, the RRCA has developed a Run Smart: Run Safe campaign that includes an educational video, which can be accessed here.  Let's enjoy ourselves but be safe out there.

In late August, representatives of BRRC attended the RRCA multi-club meeting for running clubs in Maryland
.  This annual meeting provides an opportunity for the clubs to discuss common issues, review the year's 10 Mile Club Challenge, and swap notes on developments in club operations and membership.  I was unable to attend the meeting due to illness, but am happy to thank Past President Robin Goodwin and Board Delegate Jim Archibald for ably representing BRRC.  A number of issues important to our members were discussed, including new coaching certification training and team considerations for the Club Challenge.  This meeting each year helps us understand how we are doing alongside our peers while we share best practices.

Did you know that BRRC has hosted a waterstop at the Baltimore Running Festival (the Baltimore Marathon) every year since its inception?  For many years, BRRC volunteers have handed water and Gatorade to runners on Key Highway between miles 9 and 10.  We are going to do it again this year on October 18 and need your help!  Suzie Boltz has agreed to coordinate our waterstop this year and she is seeking volunteers to come out and support the runners and the Club.  Please try to arrive between 7:00 and 7:15 a.m. to help set up tables, fill water cups, mix Gatorade, etc. We will be finished by 10:30. This allows us time to see our family and friends finish their races. The BRRC Waterstop will be located at Mile 9.5 at the intersection of Key Highway and East Cross Street. Street parking is available at this location. If you arrive after 7:30 you may have difficulty driving to the waterstop since roads will be closed. T-shirts will be provided to all volunteers that sign-up by October 10th. To volunteer, contact Suzie Boltz.

I am closing out my letter this month with the sad news that BRRC Training Program coach NyAnn Smith was tragically killed this past weekend in a motorcycle accident in Ocean City.  NyAnn was an enthusiastic supporter of BRRC and a great recruiter of new members.  Her energy and bright outlook will be missed by her many friends at BRRC.  The Training Program coaches are planning a memorial run for NyAnn, which we will announce on the website and through a special email.  Our condolences and best wishes go out to NyAnn's family.

As always, if you have a suggestion for the Club or an observation about Club activities, please let me know.  And, a special "Thank You" to our many dedicated volunteers.

Thank you for being a part of  BRRC.  I look forward to seeing you at the races!

Tim
