Preparing For A New Year

President's Message

Tomorrow, Wednesday, December 10, marks the day for our annual General Membership Meeting, to be held this year at Loch Raven High School.  Pizza and refreshments will arrive at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m.  In addition to reviewing 2014 Club activity, we will hand out Grand Prix Series awards and elect our 2015 Board.  We have a fine slate of candidates for Board positions but the nomination period is still open.  If you would like to serve, let me know and I will be sure your name is added to the ballot.  Or, come to the meeting and let me know you are interested.  Any member who has been active for more that six months can serve.  I expect the meeting to adjourn around 9:00 p.m.  I invite all members to attend this once-a-year gathering of BRRC.  I look forward to seeing you there.

BRRC hosted the 25th Anniversary running of the NCR Trail Marathon during the recent Thanksgiving weekend.  Almost 350 individuals completed the marathon.  They were joined by 65 Two-Person Relay teams and 113 finishers in our inaugural Rails to Trails 8K.  Mother Nature cooperated, leaving the NCR Trail safe for our runners.  In addition to serving as our signature race, the marathon contributes the most income to Club operations.  It is an important race to BRRC in many, many ways.  I extend a big "Thank You" to our many volunteers and Volunteer Coordinator Brian Flowers, and a special "Thank You" to Race Director Christy St. Clair, whose faithful efforts throughout the entire year made race day possible.  Click the links above for race results.

At the General Membership Meeting on Wednesday, we will look back at some of BRRC's accomplishments in 2014.  Some highlights include a sharp increase in membership and race entries, expansion of our training programs, and the introduction of our Team Store.

Looking ahead, 2015 promises to be even more exciting, as we continue to build on recent developments.  In January, we anticipate seeing a new training program for trail running.  Watch the Training Programs page of our website for more details as the program is developed.  Did you know that our 2015 Calendar is already available?  Notice that on February 15th we will be introducing a new premium race, Valentine's 10K - Cupid's Crush.  This brand new race will be held in Druid Hill Park in Baltimore.  We are very excited to be hosting a premium race in the city next year and expect it to be a success.  Also, due to timing issues with the MDRRCA 10 Mile Challenge related to GPS qualification, we have removed that race from Grand Prix Series consideration.  Instead, we will host a separate 10 Mile GPS race in early March.  Watch the website for details on that new race.  We have also added a new trail race next November, the Little Gunpowder 8 Miler, expanding our popular and growing trail race program.  And, our trail race series will be going "cupless" in 2015.  Want to know what that means?  Sign up for the first race of the trail season, the Super Bowl Trail Race, to be held February 1st at Cromwell Valley Park.  Watch the website for race announcements.

As you know by now, BRRC moved last year to a calendar-year membership cycle, which means its time for all of us to renew our membership.  We opened the renewal process last week, and it will stay open until the end of January.  All of us renewing at the same time makes membership management more effective and helps us process the GPS Standings most efficiently.  BRRC membership remains a great deal, with benefits ranging from member race fees (still just $2 for most races!) to free participation in excellent training groups, to the chance to compete in the GPS, to a really fine picnic each summer.  At $22 for individuals, it's hard to beat.  And the primary benefit is we get to run!

I expect 2015 to be a banner year for BRRC.  The strength of our training program, the growth in our volunteer and coaching ranks, and the increase in race entries and members bodes well for the Club.  I will watch the year from afar, having completed my move to Colorado, where I will be joining the Boulder Running Club.  I am honored to have served on the BRRC Board and as President and as a volunteer to this fine organization.

Thank you for being a part of  BRRC.  I look forward to seeing you tomorrow night.

Tim
