Time For The Track (and a Picnic!)

President's Message

Track season is upon us and we are preparing for the closing of the Goucher College track, which is now scheduled for June 27.  The good news is that the first BRRC track event, Summer Track Meet #1, will be held at Goucher on June 25th.  Watch the website for details on that first meet.  Once Goucher closes the track on the 27th, it will remain closed for repairs until September 1st.  We are working diligently to identify open tracks for our subsequent events and will alert all members once we have secured the facilities.  In the meantime, we hope to see you at Goucher on the 25th.

Speaking of track meets, in May our Scholarship Committee reviewed more than 15 applications and awarded scholarships to two worthy graduates, both of whom have enjoyed successful high school careers on the track.  The girls' winner of the 2014 Charlie Reynolds Memorial Scholarship is Adaeze Amaefule from Milford Mill Academy High School, and the boys' winner is Dominic Genuario from Mount Saint Joseph High School
Each will receive a $3,000 scholarship from BRRC.  We hope to see both recipients at our upcoming Family Picnic and Awards Presentation.

The BRRC Family Picnic and Awards Presentation will be held Sunday, June 22nd, starting at 1:00 p.m.  BRRC will provide catering, and so would like to know number of attendees to be sure to accommodate everyone.  Go to this page on the website for more information and to RSVP.  We appreciate it if each family would bring an appetizer, salad, or dessert to pass.

Our next event is Sunday, June 15, Father's Day.  We will run the Grand Prix Series 5K on the NCR Trail, starting at the Paper Mill parking lot.  Full details can be found here.  Remember that, as with all GPS races, all runners are welcome.

Our three Winter and Spring Training Programs wound down in May, with more training program participants running races and achieving PRs.  Learn more here.

Two new programs have been approved by the BRRC Board.  The Middle Distance Program will begin July 3rd and the Couch to 5K Program will begin August 5th.  Thanks to Tom Nasuta and Ginnie Welsh for leading these programs.  And thanks to all the great BRRC coaches for their commitment to our training groups.

I had the privilege of traveling to Spokane, Washington in May to accept on BRRC's behalf the RRCA National Running Award for 2013 Outstanding Club Website.  The award was presented to BRRC at the RRCA Convention Awards Banquet.  I am pleased that the RRCA recognized our work on BRRC.com in creating a site that is both content-rich and attractive.  A
photograph of the award and the press release we created can be found on this page of the website.

While in Spokane, I also ran the famous Bloomsday 12K, a race that attracted over 40,000 runners.  Then, later in the month, I happened to be in Boulder,
Colorado for the running of the BolderBoulder 10K.  I grabbed the opportunity to run, and finished among 45,827 other runners.  As a BRRCer who generally sticks to the modest club races, I was among more runners than I am used to.  Both races were enjoyable and remind me that it is worthwhile to add big, boisterous races to my schedule every once in a while.  And, I ran BolderBoulder in my new BRRC-branded singlet and heard some shouts of "Baltimore!" along the course.  I was proud to wear the Club colors.

As always, if you have a suggestion for the Club or an observation about Club activities, please let me know.  And, a special "Thank You" to our many dedicated volunteers.

Thank you for being a part of  BRRC.  I look forward to seeing you at the races!

Tim
