Greetings, Baltimore Road Runners Club!
As a BRRC member, we have a special place in our hearts for running, so naturally most of us were out there participating and celebrating the gift of running at the Baltimore Running Festival. What a huge, great, running event for Baltimore! Congratulations to everyone! With over 20,000 runners, and many more fans and volunteers, it is a testament to our passion to the sport. When the running boom was born in the 1970s, we could not have imagined what it has become today. The big events like the Baltimore Running Festival are so much more than we envisioned, and they have long outgrown our club’s capacity! It is an historical fact that BRRC has been here, leading the spirit of running, since 1971. Check out this fact: When I moved to Baltimore in 1979, our BRRC’s Maryland Marathon, had 325 (Three Hundred and Twenty Five!) finishers under 3:00 hours, on the famously difficult Satyr Hill course. The 2017 Baltimore Marathon had 23 (Twenty Three) finishers under 3:00 hours. Our Maryland marathon was a landmark event, international, and motivating, leading Baltimore into what has become the running culture that we enjoy today.
Since the Baltimore Running Festival, I have had the pleasure of hearing how your day was from many of you. Thank you for sharing your accomplishments with me, on facebook, or wherever it moved you! Everyone is making their own history, spreading the good word of running.
My 2017 Baltimore Running Festival day started with a longish predawn run from my home to join our aid station. Running in the dark along many of the streets that were on the marathon course, waking up to the predawn marathon happenings…..that is inspiring, I recommend it. Our aid station is located on the out and back section of Key Highway, which is Marathon Mile 9.9/11.9 and 5k Mile 1.0/1.9. Volunteering with BRRC Volunteer of the Year Suzie Boltz’ team, is more like cheering than working! Participating at our aid station is a good time, and leaves you with a good feeling, If you want to learn from the pros, this is the place. Nearly every runner was hand delivered aid. And, we left no trace, picking up early and better than we found it. An interesting piece of history was made, we also found ourselves course marshalling! When thousands of 5k runners, herding wall to wall, approached on the same side of the road as the returning leaders on Key Highway, this team stepped up, and literally saved the race from an historic head on impasse. Fantastic work, I wish we had a video of that one!

Our Couch To 5k Coach, Debbie Harper, is an inspiration to many people looking to find out if there is a place for running in their lives. Our program has made it positive difference in many people’s lives. It is incredible that we do not charge members for this program. C25K finished the fall season at the Baltimore Running Festival, and will back next spring.

The Mid Distance Training Group is tuning up for our NCR Marathon and Half Marathon. This is another great program. Motivational messages, planned workouts, group running, certified coaches. Another incredible, no charge benefit, offered to our members. With about 3 weeks to go, we have moved to the NCR trail for final training, almost time to taper. Happy Trails!

Our first North Central Trail Marathon was held on November 24, 1990 and continues to this day as an annual event. The NCR Marathon and Half Marathon and Marathon Relay is a unique, boutique event. A one of a kind combination of fast, without pavement, killer swag, and pampering, event. I encourage you join us to run or volunteer, and make your own history.
(Here is a heads up to BRRC Members…. The signups are going well for our NCR Marathon and Half Marathon. Signups are going so well, that we may sell out before race day.)
The 29th running of the NCR Marathon, Half Marathon and Relay. This historic race is always held the Saturday after Thanksgiving in Sparks, MD and serves as a great first-time marathon for newbies and veterans alike. We are now starting and having our postrace fun at the beautiful Oldfields School. The updated course is fast, net downhill. The marathon is a Boston qualifier, and the Half Marathon is certified distance. This year’s swag, as always, is the best marathon swag anywhere that I know of.
Check us out here.
And, sign up here.
The BRRC Team Store is now open! We are offering BRRC branded running shirts, jackets and more!
Here's how it works: You place your order during the weeks while the store is "open." Orders are processed after the store has closed (credit cards charged, shirts are printed, etc). It's quite simple. Get your BRRC grear, including a Team BRRC shirt for the NCR Trail Marathon. Great idea for holiday gifts, too!
