In Memory of Les Kinion

President's Message

BRRC Founder Les Kinion died in New York in July.  Les was a legend in the Baltimore and MidAtlantic running communities.  In addition to founding BRRC, Les directed the Maryland Marathon for years, along with many, many other races, some of which are still held each year.  At the same time, Les was a fierce competitor and a fine runner in his own right.  He was at the center of the running boom in Baltimore, along with a number of our current members.

Robert "Nut" Hall, himself a BRRC Hall of Famer, has written a fine tribute to Les
and provided some photos on this page on our website.  You can read the Baltimore Sun obituary here.  Les's passing and our tribute to him remind us that there is great value in building community around a shared passion.  Les and the other BRRC pioneers promoted running to the masses, from elite-class runners to beginners.  With his passing, we are reminded of the tremendous impact the running boom of the 1970's has had on all of us, providing an outlet for the love we all share - the love of running.  We are fortunate that BRRC members include a wide variety of individuals who share this passion, from running boomers to young promising stars to mid-packers and beginners.  Because of Les, we are all welcome at BRRC.

If you would like to proudly show the BRRC colors, our Team Store is open through this week.  The store will close on
August 18, after which all orders will be processed and either shipped or ready for pickup.  BRRC-branded items include singlets, short- and long-sleeved technical shirts, hats, skull caps, track pants, and pullovers.

July saw lots of activity on the track for BRRC, with the Meet of Miles, Summer Track Meet #2, and Two Person 10 Mile Relay.  Our trail runners ran a challenging course at the Sweet Air Trail Race

GPS Standings are up to date.  The Series will continue with the Too Hot To Trot 10K on August 17 on the NCR Trail at Sparks Road.  Click on the link above for more information.

The NCR Trail Marathon is celebrating its 25 year anniversary this year (as I have been reminding you all year!).  To allow more runners to participate in this special event, we have added an 8K to the race options.  So, if you are not inclined to run the full marathon or the two-person relay, I encourage you to sign up for the 8K.  Register now while slots are still available.  At the same time, you can participate by volunteering.  Contact Brian Flowers to volunteer.

As always, if you have a suggestion for the Club or an observation about Club activities, please let me know.  And, a special "Thank You" to our many dedicated volunteers.

Thank you for being a part of  BRRC.  I look forward to seeing you at the races!
