Happy June, Baltimore Road Runners Club!
There is so much happening this time of year! At BRRC, we have many great events to enhance your busy running summer schedule. Enjoy!
Next Race: Father’s Day 5k!
Next race for us is our Father’s Day 5k. This is the 4th race of the 9 races in our BRRC Grand Prix Series. I have been to quite a few Father’s Days runs. It’s a tradition at the Pecks. (I know you are surprised by that.) Many years ago, our family’s Father’s Day runs, like so many other’s, would go down something like this: My son, or daughter, would be very young, and they may have never run that far, at least without walking. The first mile, we are pretty happy, and then, it gets interesting. There is anxiety, and then discontent. “I can’t go further”, and “I will never do this again”, all that. But the finish finally arrives, and the indoctrination has happened. “Where is our run tomorrow, Dad?” Priceless. I dig Father’s Days runs, but the lucky kids dig them even more. Our Father’s Day 5k will again be on our NCR trail, at Paper Mill Road. Out and back, race day signup only. This is a good run to start your day, and maybe, make a difference in someone’s future. See you there!
The Great BRRC Summer Track Meet Series Begins June 20th!
Here is some great news! We have enjoyed a long standing partnership with Goucher College. The beautiful and safe campus, and outstanding track facility has been a great place for us for many years. Goucher is thriving, and the campus has many ongoing construction projects, including, much of the transportation and athletic facilities. During this time, we have not been on campus and miss that. And, I thank our members, our volunteers, and Gopher fans, on behalf of BRRC and Goucher, for your patience and cooperation during this time. THANK YOU! While our club is not a large community of runners, we are the role model in patience and cooperation! Your ongoing excellent reputation for sportsmanship, gracious conduct, and supporting the running lifestyle, has allowed us the privilege to host our 4 track meets and our GPS Meet of Miles at Goucher this summer. We are on a limited access schedule, so take advantage of visiting the track! Please go to www.brrc.com over the coming days for an updated schedule for those meets.
BRRC Annual Picnic, Awards, and Party!
If you have not already done so, please mark your calendars for our annual picnic on Sunday, June 23rd, at Brian Flower’s homestead. This is a great party and picnic. We have awesome barbecue, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and your bounty of foods to share. We will be awarding our annual Charlie Reynolds Memorial Scholarships (two $3000 scholarships this year), as well as recognizing our 2017 performance award recipients. Free to members and our guests, please sign up ahead of time, online at brrc.com.
On the Trails with BRRC!
Trail running, specifically, single track trail running, is up, way up. At BRRC, we now have 7 trail races, and some are at maximum capacity. And, in the first ever trail run in our Grand Prix Series, in hot and humid conditions, our classic Gunpowder Trail Race, was held on May 27th. Congratulations to the 118 finishers; our volunteers: James Brinsfield, Bart Rein, Kelli Rostkowski, Shaun Viec, Rachel Rosenblatt, Jody Benedict Berinato, Michelle Barrick, Pamela Bilger, Todd Bilger, and Dan Hawk; and, our Race Director, Erin Surette, who were a part of making BRRC history at this event!
Next up in our trail runs, is BRRC’s second annual Twilight Run at Talmar and Cromwell Valley Park on July 3rd. Bring a light, and enjoy a fun run that finishes at dusk! There is a thirst in the greater Baltimore area for trail runs, especially affordable, night time runs, with a gathering after (McFaul’s for us!). This may be the only event like this in the greater Baltimore area, and I suggest a Heads Up if you are considering running: We may reach capacity before race day. Go to www.brrc.com
to find out more regarding pre-race online signups.
Happy Father's Day, 24 years ago!
