2015 GPS Series

Starts January 18!

The 2015 Grand Prix Series (GPS) begins January 18 with the GPS 8 Miler at Loch Raven. The GPS is BRRC’s annual series of races that encourage age-group competition. For example, if you are 31 years old, you will compete with runners in the 30 - 34 age-group bracket, and so on. There are 8 GPS races run throughout the year at various distances, and on various terrains – roads, trails, and track. A runner must complete at least 4 of the 8 races and fulfill a volunteer commitment to count in the final standings and to qualify for an award that includes a GPS T-shirt. Awards to the top three finishers in each age group are presented at the Club’s General Membership Meeting in December.

To qualify for GPS standings, a runner must be an active member of BRRC on January 31st. If you haven't renewed your membership yet, you may do so here. This new system improves management of GPS standings, which was previously made challenging by memberships that expired at different points throughout the year. With our new registration service, RaceIt, we have converted to an all-member January renewal.

GPS competitors must fulfill a volunteer commitment by the date of the final GPS race, which is November 1st. This change was made so that there is adequate time between the final race and the General Membership Meeting to finalize GPS results and order awards. To be clear, if you have not volunteered for BRRC before November 1st, you will not be eligible for a GPS award in 2015.

This year's Maryland RRCA Club Challenge will not count towards BRRC's GPS series in 2015. To fill the void, we are returning to Loch Raven on March 1st for the new GPS 10 miler. Some of us are jokingly referring to it as Another Dam Race at Loch Raven. It is on March 1st.

Membership Renewal Period Ends January 31

In 2014, BRRC moved to a calendar-year membership system. All members must renew now to be active for 2015. We ask that you go to the registration site and renew your membership between now and January 31. Members renewing by January 31 will qualify for the 2015 Grand Prix Series. For more information on BRRC membership, you can visit our membership page.

Seeking Volunteers!

We are seeking members to volunteer with events in 2015. There are opportunities for race directing, assisting with races, helping with club administration and more. Our strength as a Club is dependent on the commitment of our volunteers. Without your help, we have no club! Please let us know if you'd like to lend a hand.

BRRC Trail Race Series

Going green in twenty-fifteen

Once again the Baltimore Road Runners is pleased to present the BRRC Trail Race Series, sometimes referred to as the “Billy Goat trail races." This series was dreamed up by Chris Cucuzzella and Rick Bingham in the fall of 1998 as they sat at a local pub enjoying some Guinness and telling stories of past trail running adventures. They started the series with 4 winter trail races in 1999, with the first race taking place the day after a snow/ice storm. It attracted ten people, including local running legend, Serge Arbona.
The first races were wrought with lost racers who eventually showed up at the finish line but not only came back for more but asked for more opportunities to display a seemingly obvious lack of good sense. The series grew to the 8 race series that it is today with well-marked courses and a crowd that continues to grow strongly each year. The distances range from under 5 miles to a “fat ass” style 50K that draws runners from quite some distance.
These races offer everything a trail runner could want: stream crossings from ankle to waist deep; shoe-sucking mud; hills that should come with a tow lift; the occasional wildlife encounter including deer, copperheads, and hornets; and, weather of all kinds including snow, sleet, rain, heat, and the ever-present Maryland humidity. But most of all, we are blessed with beautiful trails in gorgeous nearby locations and the fantastic volunteers that make it all happen and make for races that are some of the best you can find anywhere.
This year, in an effort to be as “green” as we can and to “leave no trace” so that we can continue to enjoy these wonderful locations, we are instituting a “cup-less” initiative. Entry fees for the first race of the series, the Superbowl Trail Race, will include a re-usable 6oz cup that folds flat and rolls up to fit in any key pocket that you can find in most pairs of shorts or running pants, or even in your sock. While we will provide water at all of our trail races, we will not provide cups. Cups will be available for purchase after the Superbowl race or additional should you want more than one until supplies run out for $3 each. The retail price for this cup is $6 and the ones we’ll have will have the club logo on it. How can you beat that?!!
We look forward to seeing you at the trail races and if you haven’t tried trail running yet, we also encourage you to try it. Our new trail running training program is available to you as well if you like.
Happy Trails!!!!

Trail Run

Let's face it - running during the winter months in Baltimore can be challenging. It can also be a fun and rewarding experience with the right group of friends. New this year to our ever-growing group of training programs is BRRC's first ever Trail Run Training Program. The Trail Run Training Program is designed for individuals who have some running experience and are looking to participate in trail running races ranging from 5 miles, 10 miles and possibly beyond. Its target races include our very own BRRC Trail Series and also the HAT 50k in March! We have an experienced bunch of coaches leading the effort - Tom Nasuta, Hugh Wilson, Bart Rein, Ken Furman, Brenda Dailey and Casey Fisher. The training group will meet twice a week with long runs planned at Loch Raven on Saturday mornings. If you haven't run trails at Loch Raven, you don't know what you're missing. For more information on this and any of our other training groups, click here.

Team Store

Due to its success last winter and summer, the BRRC Team Store is now open through January 26th! We will again be offering BRRC branded running shirts, singlets, knit caps and more!

Here's how it works: You place your order during the weeks while the store is "open." Orders are processed after the store has closed (credit cards charged, shirts are printed, etc). Two to three weeks later, your gear will be shipped or you'll be notified that it's ready for pick-up. It's really quite simple. Click this link to check it out.

Cupid's 10K Crush

Don't forget to register for Cupid's 10k on February 15, 2015. Cupid's 10k Crush will be a fun and exciting race for all runners. It is a premium Baltimore Road Runners Club sponsored race, formerly known as the Valentine's 10k. This race will take BRRC and its members back to Baltimore City for the first time in years. The 10k course will send runners on a scenic, rolling, and winding course throughout Druid Hill Park, around the lake, and the Baltimore Zoo. The race promises to be fun, a bit chilly, and a little wacky. So get your cupid on and dress for the occasion (clothing optional). The less clothes you wear or the more skin you show could end up winning you special prizes for the skimpiest, sexiest, or wackiest running costume. Have a special Valentine you'll be running with on race day? Sign up for a chance to win our fastest couple category (coed, male, or female).

Pre-race will begin at 7 am at the park Lakeside Pavilion on Grove Rd. Timing will be done by our favorite race management guru, Nut Hall and his crew from Maryland Timing. Enjoy pre and post race festivities under the pavilion. We will have refreshments, not-adult beverages, hot soup, and all the chocolate you can eat! There will be great age group awards and many random holiday related prizes. This is a great opportunity to showcase our club and show the running community we love running, racing, and our members. Bring a friend, run the race, volunteer, join our club, or just come to cheer your favorite runner. 2015 promises to be a great year for our club and Cupid's 10k Crush promises to kick it off in exciting fashion.

Volunteers are needed for this race to make it successful. If you wish to volunteer, please contact the race director Rob Santoni.
