September already. I bet you're tired of this heat and humidity, aren't you? Oh, but make sure you cherish these next few months. You know, one day they're in diapers and the next they're graduating from college. Before you know it we'll be cursing Mama Nature for cancelling races with her fury of snow and ice. Enjoy the cooler, drier autumn air - and enjoy the RACE SEASON.
BRRC has a couple of races coming up this month. First is the Executive Stampede on the 20th, held at Executive Plaza in Hunt Valley. This race is an important one for our club as it helps fund the Charlie Reynolds Memorial Scholarship. We award scholarships annually to graduating high school seniors. I encourage you, even if you're not a part of a corporation running in the team category, to take part and help contribute. If you can't run, we can always use volunteers too, you know. Email Jessica Krueger if you're interested in helping out.
The second race is the GPS Half Marathon held on the 26th at the NCR Trail in Sparks. You know the drill. Fast course, good competition. Only two races remain - make it count. Note that the race has been moved up to Saturday.
The Across the Bay 10K training kicked off the other night. Unfortunately I missed it, but I'm excited to meet our new training participants. An added bonus for everyone who signs up - each runner will receive a discount for $10 of registration for the race.
Speaking of discount codes: Baltimore Road Runners Club has partnered with Road ID to offer members a 20% off discount for each order for the first 20 days in September. Road ID is a great way to keep your personal identification visible on you while you're out leading an active lifestyle. You can place your order online at www.RoadID.com and enter the coupon code during the checkout process. Discount Code: H9VMH73PGJ - Thanks to Karen Malinowski for organizing.
Did you know that BRRC has hosted a waterstop at the Baltimore Marathon every year since its inception? We're doing it again this year, folks. Suzie Boltz has agreed once again to coordinate our waterstop and she is seeking volunteers to come and support BRRC and the marathon runners. The waterstop is located at mile 9.5 at the intersection of Key Highway and Cross Street and you'll be finished by 10:30. T-shirts will be provided to everyone, too. To volunteer, contact Suzie - email@example.com. Please don't make fun of me as I stomp on through ;)
I've been trying to get a feel for ways that I can make our club great and ways that our great club can give back. Personally, I'd like to see members organize themselves for clean-up efforts around town. I often run from my home in Parkville down Harford Road to Lake Montebello. I'm continually heartbroken by the amount of trash I stumble over. Nothing would make me happier than getting a group of like-minded people together to go for a little run and pick up debris along the way. We could sport our BRRC gear and spread the gospel of running while making our home a better place. Then, I dunno, maybe we could wash our hands and grab a drink at a local watering hole.
That's just an idea that I've had. I'm open to suggestions and I'm asking you to email me and let me know how you think BRRC can be more involved in the community. No idea is too ludicrous. I think.
Thanks for making BRRC Pretty Darn Cool. I'll see you a little later on this month.
