I freaking love our club. Running the 27th NCR Trail Marathon yesterday did nothing but cement that fact. When the pain subsides and I'm able to walk down steps again, I'm going to look back with nothing but fond memories.
Our race directors, Bart Rein and Juda McGannon, outdid themselves again this year. Everything was so well organized, the premiums were A+ top-notch, no detail went unnoticed. Overseeing a marathon that takes place the week of Thanksgiving is no little undertaking. The time and effort needed to put on the event is enough and then you throw a family holiday into the mix. I heard the bad news that Bart wasn't able to smoke his Thanksgiving turkey because he was up so late and overslept on Thursday. Two packet pickups, answering last minute emails, registering more runners, schlepping premiums around town - I can imagine. Thank you both for all of your hard work.
And the volunteers - are you kidding me? Standing out along the sometimes desolate trail to offer runners a cup and some words of encouragement. You guys are the reason we're able to showcase BRRC like this. You're the thing that makes this race such a big success. And I have to say: hearing things like "go Prez" and "looking good Johnny" made for a more enjoyable experience - one of the perks, for sure.
And I'd be totally remiss if I didn't give Brian Flowers a shout out - coordinating all of our volunteers for the marathon. Two-shift waterstops, a ton of road crossings, bikers and more - I hope he knows how much he's appreciated.
And the Finisher's Certificates written out by Dick Talbot. It's the icing on the cake. It's the classiest way to remember a day hard fought.
And freaking Dave Berdan broke the course record, if you guys weren't paying attention. He ran all alone to an easy 2:29. 26.2 miles, no biggie.
I wasn't far behind him, though. Okay, I was pretty far behind him. I was starting to go into a dark place with two miles left to go when my friend Dan Hawk came running in the opposite direction. "Christian told me to come run you in." Dan has no idea how much I needed him in that instant. Thank you, Dan. Sorry for cussing so much. Sorry I had no idea where I was and couldn't even talk to you, Christian.
And freaking all of our friends who ran their first marathon! Leslie Fort CRUSHED it. Buddy Weber CRUSHED it. Glenn Smith CRUSHED it. I emailed Buddy last night to see how he made out with the race and he had me laughing out loud with his brief recap. You'll have to make sure to ask him about it. Live to fight another day, Buddy! Were there any other first timers out there?
I've learned a lot the past two years and I'm glad that you let me oversee things for a bit and act as Prez. Our General Membership Meeting will be held on December 5th at the Perry Hall Branch of the Baltimore County Public Library. We'll recognize our 2016 race directors, present GPS awards, and elect our 2017 board and officers. Our Board Nominating Committee's report will be sent this week so that you can familiarize yourself with the ballot beforehand.
Thanks again for everything. BRRC is nothing without its volunteers. I'm looking forward to contributing in the years to come and maybe racing you guys on the weekends too.
