A Ugandan Mother's Story

All of us at Raise the Roof Academy are life-long learners. We are on an exciting journey of discovery. When Raise the Roof Academy opened its doors, we began by listening to the dreams, doubts, and hopes of our children. Everyone has a story; families and communities have stories. When we take the time to listen, we see how our individual stories are enriched by the people God brings in our lives.

Our stories are incomplete without the children, teachers, and village communities Raise the Roof Academy serves. Our story is incomplete without you! We are richer and our mission is clearer because of our individual stories and shared experiences that paint the RTRA family portrait.

You are a part of many wonderful stories. Stories of children who have moved from sadness to joy, from despair to hope, from abandonment to belonging, and from sickness to health. At Raise the Roof Academy, we believe what happens at school is only lasting if it can be sustained at home and in the community. That is why we invest in the children’s guardians as native leaders. We want our students to believe and celebrate the ways God is changing their stories.

One such story is Betty and her sons, John and Martin. When Betty’s sons were admitted to RTRA, she was ecstatic and could not stop thanking everyone. Betty’s animated gratitude and joy is understandable when we look into her story. Betty lost three children to HIV/AIDS and before RTRA, she took on every odd job in the village with hopes that she could earn an income to send her sons to school. All this changed when her sons got sponsored and they began attending RTRA. Betty has not stopped. She now pours all her energy into RTRA as a volunteer. She is a gifted leader who inispires all the guardians.  Betty leads a center team made up of fellow women who oversee 200 RTRA
students across 8 villages. Betty is enrolled in the RTRA Leadership Initiative Program, she leads an RTRA pig project, and this year she is going to help us launch the inaugural class of our RTRA Women’s Sewing School.
John will be graduating from Primary School to Secondary School this year, and Martin will be in Primary Five. Betty, John, and Martin are the epitome of Raise the Roof Academy’s mission. This is why your story, and my story, is inextricably tied with theirs and our RTRA community. Together we are learning that all things are possible. We are learning that widows can become community leaders, orphans can pursue the dream of becoming teachers, engineers, doctors and more, families can break the cycle of poverty, and that rural Ugandan women have much to teach us.
Let's hike together Saturday, April 22nd at Edwin Warner Park to give better health for the children at RTRA!

Christmas Giving
This was by far the largest Christmas Celebration for the children at Raise the Roof Academy! Hours before the celebration began, the children and their families  gathered in anticipation, wondering which gifts were chosen for them. Then came the hilarious scene of 67 goats being delivered! The celebration began at 11am and went until 4pm. It was such a joy to be a witness to every minute of it. Because of your generosity, every child received a Christmas gift! We cannot express to you what that meant to the children.

We  enjoyed a special lunch together, and when the last gift was given we walked down to the site of the new kitchen and pavilion for the ground-breaking ceremony. What a day that will be when the children and staff can eat their breakfast and lunch under a roof out of the rain and hot sun.

We love sharing photos of your sponsored children receiving your gifts. As you can imagine, it is a challenge capturing, organizing, and labeling all of the photos. We will be mailing your photos soon. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
