Building skills for a healthy life

Children from Islington's Andover Estate had the chance this half term to try their hand at cooking pancakes from scratch and learning about healthy alternatives to sugar. Funded by BBC Children in Need the cooking sessions have also given children the chance to bake simple bread and spring rolls. 'I like coming here,' says Isabelle. 'They trust us to have a go here, but at home my mum watches me too much!' All the children were willing to try new foods, especially the pot of cinnamon which got sprinkled liberally on everything including the cheese and sweetcorn pancake. They're hoping to tackle spaghetti bolognese next time. Find out more about this and our healthy eating courses.

Zero tolerance for FGM

Manor Gardens' work to end FGM has been recognised with a Communities of Health Award, a quality standard funded by Newham CCG. Project Manager Eleanor Tomlinson said: 'We are very pleased to have been successful in gaining the Communities of Health Award for our FGM Prevention Service in Newham. We found the assessment process very useful in reflecting on how the service could be further improved and help us plan for the future.' Read more.

On 9th February the Newham FGM Prevention Service marked Zero Tolerance to FGM Day 2016 at St Mark's Community Centre, Beckton, under the theme ‘working in partnership to achieve zero tolerance to FGM in Newham’. Read more.
Preschool passes inspection with flying colours
A recent inspection by Islington Council passed our Preschool's Food Hygiene and Standards with top marks as 'very good'. Food is cooked for the children at Grafton Primary School but transported to Manor Gardens and served quickly and efficiently. Well done.

We took Time to Talk about mental health
February 4th was National Time to Talk Day, tackling the stigma of mental health. As part of our new Wellbeing Service staff and volunteers started up conversations about wellbeing with over 30 people - parents from Preschool, colleagues and passers-by. In the afternoon we hosted a special Time to Talk tea party with cakes donated by our local Sainsbury's. We talked about our own wellbeing and how we can spread the message even further. Read more.
