Summer is FINALLY here and it's all about the mix.

Not just referring to the tonic, I mean mixing furniture, creating a space that’s warm and inviting. Have you ever walked into a room and it feels old and stuffy?  A room full of antiques gives off that feeling, that’s why it's important to have a little fun with your space and mix and match. Sounds easy, but how do you incorporate a mix of styles and eras without the room looking like chaos?

Just like mixing a drink, there is a formula for mixing old and new. Consider 75/25 as a perfect cocktail and equation to making a space come alive with antiques and modern elements. If your home is 75% modern, consider adding an antique lamp or side table with your traditional chair.

Keep the scale of the pieces in a similar size. A dainty antique chair can look swamped and out of place next to a large contemporary sofa. Combining pieces that have a similar height and scale will make the interior look seamless and pulled together.

Remember, antique furniture can be smaller in proportion and may not fit within its intended space. For example, a small wooden chair may not be suitable with a modern scaled table, but could still work very well as a nightstand with a small lamp. Another option is to use it as a simple stand-alone chair in an entranceway, which is functional and aesthetically pleasing. When deciding what to do, choose a couple of key pieces that will act as the main features in the room. Those pieces are the links to add the other smaller pieces.

Mixing old and new pieces in a room can sometimes create a cluttered feeling, try to avoid using too many colors as this will only add to the busyness. A lighter color palette works with any style of decor and highlights the pieces rather than compete with them.

If you love color, consider bringing in cushions, an area rug and drapery that has color. Adding color, pattern and texture through soft furnishings like cushions and smaller accent pieces such as an occasional chair can also help lift the space and inject a bit of personality.

The main takeaway is… it's your home and surround yourself with the things you love, the items that tell a story, have a history and matter to you. The rest will fall into place, the process of creating a look evolves and tweaking is required.
