Help to Feed the Hungry - Volunteer at the L.A. Food Bank
By Christopher Bobo and the Board of Social Justice and Outreach

“Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food’…”
(Matthew 25:34-35).

August 6 from 8:30 to 12:30 is UCC Day at the L.A. Food Bank! Thanks to the Seaside United Church of Christ in Torrance, the L.A. Food Bank is having a UCC Volunteer Event Day when we can fight hunger right here in L.A. County by giving a little bit of our time. Currently, one in six  people in Los Angeles experiences hunger. But you can help feed the hungry by helping us sort, inspect, and repackage donated food items from local food drives before they get distributed to those in need.

Please sign-up now using the link and password below. The password is: “seaside”.  And it is case sensitive. Just click on this: Sign me up for Saturday, August 6 - 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Upon registration, you will receive an email confirmation with all the logistics and forms. If you do not receive the email confirmation, please check your spam/junk folder.

The minimum age requirement is 14. There are no exceptions. All volunteers must wear closed-toe/closed-heel shoes. Parking is available on-site and carpooling is encouraged. The volunteer location is 1734 E. 41st Street, Los Angeles, CA 90058.

Hope to see you there.

Summer Is Here!
By Nancy Valencia, Executive Director, DAYS Long Beach

DAYS Long Beach is celebrating its 47th year of summer camp. If you have been around the church campus, you have probably seen classroom modules focusing on health, nutrition, science, art, parent rngagement, and yoga classes, to name a few. This past school year, Leaders Long Beach (LLB), the DAYS LB youth group, have devoted their time to developing and creating interesting curriculum for summer camp. Through this process, LLB youth have uncovered so many of their own hidden talents to share with the younger campers.

The campers spend the day interacting with children their own age, but also have the benefit of spending time with older former campers. They receive one-on-one support from both staff and volunteers. The DAYS program understands true change comes from inside the community rather than out. This is why the DAYS summer program invests itself in giving its campers as many tools as necessary to excel in academics and develop the life skills necessary to become the next generation of consciously invested members of their community.

Our campers recently traveled to the Griffith Observatory, and in the next several weeks they are scheduled to visit the California Science Center. They are gaining experiences that are stimulating, and they are in line with educational content for all educational levels.

Year after year, children find their way to us. The ongoing support of First Church allows DAYS Long Beach to continue to build and strength relationships with the children, which will last a lifetime. We are all so deeply grateful for your love and support, First Church. To learn more about DAYS Long Beach, visit our new website at http://www.dayslb.org/.
