In response to the challenges of the past year, the need to further unite & strengthen the outdoor sector nationally has been identified by the Outdoor Council of Australia (OCA).
The OCA Board, which is made up of CEOs and Presidents of many of the State and National outdoor sector peaks, has committed to inviting 100 sector representatives to gather together this year for a National Summit.

Given the uncertainty in the current operating environment regarding interstate travel, the OCA is investigating options to make this a hybrid event with some people attending in person and others online.
There have been a lot of conversations recently, many including people in Victoria, to flesh out the details of What When & How we can make this summit a success.
Some of the items we plan to cover:
·       Effective communication on outdoor sector careers
·       Training pathways
·       Accreditation and safety
·       Superior service offer
·       Galvanised marketing of the sectors
·       Pay and conditions
·       Retention of professionals across the sectors
We plan to form working groups around these discussions, who will then report back to the larger group  to  facilitate action.
OCA are working through the finer details to ensure we collect reflections and ideas from those connected to the outdoors. We will be back to you soon with more detail on how you can contribute.

The National Outdoor Education Conference (NOEC) is ON!

When: 28 Sept, 12:00 pm – 01 Oct, 4:00 pm
Where: Fairmont Resort & Spa Blue Mountains

After a false start during COVID-19, the event was postponed and now will be reconvened in September 2021 in the beautiful Blue Mountains in NSW. In its 21st year we now get to hold it in 2021.
This is a great opportunity to reconnect with the industry and answer a few burning questions… How are we doing and how do we know? Whats working well? What's getting in the way? What are we going to do next?
Two and a half days of extraordinary thought provoking content and networking and a day of exploring case studies and networking… who’s in? Please note that this will be a in-person event.

Kids in Nature

Nature Kindergarten Update

We are very excited that the first major face-to-face engagement for the Nature Kindergarten Facilitation Demonstration Project is starting this week. Outdoors Victoria's facilitator Rose Major and colleague Lisa Coxon from the Early Childhood Outdoor Learning Network (ECOLN) travel to Sale on February 26 and 27 to work with a number of organisations to boost the uptake of early childhood outdoor programs in the Shire.

Rose has worked closely with Wellington Shire Council to provide the opportunity for educators from 8 kinders in the LGA, as well as one from neighbouring East Gippsland Shire, to access ECOLN training and follow-on support. This will be provided partly under the School Readiness Funding program and partly under the auspices of the project.

Representatives from the Council will also undertake the training, to make sure that the Council can then provide support and strategic direction to further underpin the ability of kinders to implement Bush Kinder-type programs.

Also on board with the visit is the Kindergarten Improvement Advisor based in East Gippsland, with a view to extending the project in that LGA over the next year.
We thank Sport and Recreation Victoria & ECOLN for funding this project

News from the field

Welcome to our new 'News from the Field' section. Each month we will feature news or stories from our Unis, TAFES/RTO's & Schools. Teachers or students are invited to submit stories, articles or events (including an image) to Robyn: Help keep us all connected to what's happening in the real world of Outdoor Education.

To kick us off we received an article from Aaron Simson-Woods on behalf of Vic Uni. Victoria University’s Outdoor Leadership team recently completed a series of field teaching experiences to Mt Arapiles/Djurid with their Outdoor Leadership and Outdoor and Environmental Education first year students for their Safety in Natural Environments unit. Read more about their explorations and learning outcomes way beyond just safety.

Josh Ambrosy has also let us know about his new expanded series of Masterclasses for OES this year through EarthEd- check out  VCE MASTERCLASS SERIES

Earth Ed also still may have bookings left for their fire ecology program which links to OES unit 2: Their program is funded and Gov schools get subsidised travel.
