Dear Subscriber

Well we find ourselves back in lockdown throughout Victoria and once again the same industries and types of jobs generally suffer the most. We know that many of you are really struggling. If you are please reach out to your nearest and dearest....or anyone who can listen to you, including us. Most of us are just plain weary but in times like this helping others, even through just listening, can give us all a sense of purpose. Take care of yourselves and we'll see you in the outdoors once again soon.

Please take a few moments to read our news for July, 2021. We promise to give you some good news!

OCA Summit Update

The Outdoor Council of Australia (OCA) summit held in May 2021 involved a preparation survey inviting attendees to voice their priorities in relation to change for the industry. This was then ratified at the summit and 5 groups were formed to continue discussion.
These included:
  • Pay conditions and retention of staff
  • Training and career pathways
  • Industry frameworks
  • Access & inclusion &
  • Promotion of the industry
Three priorities were quickly identified as manageable areas to start work on, with matters of ‘access all abilities’, ‘inclusion’ and ‘promotion of the industry’ considerations for each of the working groups.

The groups have been formed under these titles:
  • 'Attraction and Retention of Outdoor Workers'
  • 'Outdoor Qualifications and Training Pathways'
  • 'Industry Accreditation and Frameworks'
The three groups have commenced their meetings to establish guidelines for working together. Over time, gaps in skills and experience will be identified for different projects and we’ll be reaching out for interested people in our community, as well as external experts, to fill these gaps.
We will continue to keep you updated on developments and initiatives that emerge. I am the facilitator (ie.Secretary, Chair and Deputy Chair roles will be appointed next) of the ‘Outdoor Qualifications and Pathways’ working group, so reach to me if you have any queries: ceo@outdoorsvictoria.org.au

A wonderful bit of video artwork from Lori Modde (Outdoors NSW/ ACT) literally paints you a picture and tells the story well of what we are all trying to accomplish: check it out!

Please contact us if you are interested)
These 3 positions are available for individuals who have lost a job as a consequence of the pandemic, or for those that have had hours reduced by at least 50%, these conditions also apply to those running their own small business.

Welcome back to an old OV staff member, Josh Ambrosy! Josh brought a lot of energy to his role as our Outdoor Education Officer. These days you can find him over at Federation University, Ballarat, working as an outdoor educator, at a desk working on his PhD or helping out OV staff in the background with a myriad of queries. Despite all of that he still put his hand up to join the Board!

She is currently the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Sabrands and the Director of Blacklight Distribution, a family business which is the importer and distributor of outdoor brands Nitro Snowboards and Mammut across Australia and New Zealand.
