The $25 million first phase of the Culinary Institute of the Pacific has been completed and includes two state-of-the-art culinary teaching labs that will implement technology to provide hands on training for small classes.

A San Francisco Startup is Serving Chicken that was Made in a Lab


A food technology startup in San Francisco has grown a chicken strip from self-reproducing cells in a lab, making it the first to produce this type of lab-grown meat.

Memphis Meats, located in the Bay Area, is planning to reveal its creation on Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reports. Umami-ya Shabu Shabu opened earlier this month as the hot-pot craze in Hawai‘i seems to be on a steady simmer. But restaurateur Peter Kim believes his version of the popular concept—more upscale, more Korean—offers something different.

He’s focusing on high-quality meats including U.S. wagyu beef and Kurobuta pork belly, local veggies and distinctly Korean flavors. And the expansive restaurant space, next door to Liliha Bakery (which Kim also owns) on Nimitz Highway, is sleek and modern, with dark furniture and dramatic lighting. McDonald's Corp has begun testing its long-awaited U.S. mobile ordering app, with the goal of avoiding the kinds of service hiccups that have haunted digital debuts by companies such as Starbucks.

Digital ordering has been challenging for many restaurant chains and their customers. Domino's Pizza, now the industry leader, took years to perfect it. Starbucks' technology took far less time, but in January the chain said mobile orders poured in faster than they could be processed, creating backlogs that drove away time-crunched walk-in customers. The chef Paul Pairet's style is set as avant-garde figurative. The 20-course (or so) menu will move in a series of dishes grouped by size and nature.
