From Our President
The Waverley Music Eisteddfod Inc Committee is delighted to announce that we are on track to bring you a COVID-safe 2021 Monash Youth Music Festival!

Our Ensembles Day is planned for Saturday 7th August 2021 in Huntingtower School's superb Performing Arts Centre.

The maximum size of the Junior and Senior Large Ensembles will be 60 players, giving more young people opportunity to take part on stage.

Unfortunately there will be no Primary School Choirs section this year, but we will run the Middle School and Senior Choirs in the Huntingtower Performing Arts Centre on Thursday 12th August after school hours. If your choir falls within the Years 5 - 8 category, you are more than welcome to enter your primary school choir in the Middle School Choirs section.

For the very first time, we will be introducing a new event - the VCE Music Recitals, open to current VCE music performance students. More information can be found in this e-news!

Again we will be offering competitive solo sections in Piano, Recorder, Strings, Vocal and Wind, and non-competitive Solo and Duets sections.

Our dedicated Committee will continue to plan for our future Monash Youth Music Festivals, because we believe that there is nothing like the experience of live performance!

I encourage all young musicians to take part in this year’s events, and we hope everyone will find something they will enjoy. Participants and audience members will be asked to read our latest COVID-19 Plan  before their arrival, and check in using the Vic Gov Check in QR Code or Check In Form provided.

Looking forward to seeing you at this year's Festival!

– Gordon Pyke, President, Waverley Music Eisteddfod Inc.

The Monash Youth Music Festival's newest event offers VCE music performance students a splendid opportunity to perform their chosen pieces in brass, piano, orchestral strings, vocal or woodwind.

This section is non-competitive and offers the VCE student an opportunity to gain valuable performance experience, and to assist them in perfecting their music for their VCE music exams.

The Adjudicator gives every participant a detailed Adjudicator’s report and conducts a short master class at the end of the section to provide musical insights, feedback and practice techniques.

The time limit for each performer is 8 minutes. Participants may choose more than one piece, provided that the total playing time does not exceed the time limit.

Performers other than pianists: performing accompanied is optional – you may choose to perform with your own accompanist, or unaccompanied.

Only students currently doing VCE Music Performance are eligible to enter. If this applies to you, don't miss out!

The Instrumental Ensemble and Chamber Music sections will be held in the beautiful state-of-the-art Huntingtower Performing Arts Centre on Saturday 7 August 2021.

This discipline has four sections:

E01 Large Instrumental Ensemble

14 years and under, 10 to 60 players.

E02 Junior Instrumental Ensemble

15 years and under, 3 to 9 players.

E03 Senior Instrumental Ensemble

18 years and under, 10 to 60 players.

E04 Chamber Music Group

21 years and under, up to 9 players.

A variety of ensembles enter these sections. In previous years, the two large ensemble sections attracted orchestras, concert bands, “Jazz” and “Irish” bands, and guitar ensembles. The sections for smaller ensembles drew entries from classical piano trios and quintets, string and wind ensembles including a clarinet choir, and a guitar trio.

The Instrumental Ensemble/Chamber Music sections are for acoustic ensembles. One or two instruments within a large group may be amplified, but this should be kept to a minimum and should not dominate the sound. For example, one might use an electric bass in a concert band, or include an electronic keyboard in an orchestra to cover missing instruments. (see ‘Notes’ in the Schedule).

Please do not bring your own drum kit! The venue supplies a drum kit, keyboard and piano.

sketch stage plan of your ensemble would be greatly appreciated, so please submit your stage plan when you register, to help us run the day smoothly.

While the Primary School Choirs section C01 is not available this year, the Middle School Choir (years 5 - 8) and the Secondary School Choir competitions will be held in the beautiful Huntingtower Performing Arts Centre on the evening of Thursday 12th August.

If your Primary School choir comprises students in years 5 and 6, you are more than welcome to enter your choir in the Middle School Choirs section.

This year's Choral sections include:

C02 Middle School Choir

(Year Levels 5-9) Limit 60 voices.
Each choir will sing TWO songs in contrasting styles.

C03 Secondary School Chamber Choir

Limit 30 voices.
Each Choir will sing TWO songs in contrasting styles.

A grand piano and choral risers are available for all sections. We do not provide an accompanist. Your choir will be offered a warm up room prior to their performance, and ushers will be on hand to ensure your choir gets onto stage on time.

Our preferred way of receiving entries is via Stardom. If you need to pay by cheque then simply print your invoice and send it with the cheque to Choral Registrar, C/o PO Box 121 Mount Waverley 3149.

If you have any queries, please contact our Choral Registrar, Gordon Pyke.

Do you play in an ensemble, or take music lessons, but have never performed solo? Why not enter this year's Monash Youth Music Festival's many solo sections? Our AMEB graded sections, or the non-competitive Mini Recital sections might be the perfect introduction into Music Festivals and Eisteddfods. We provide a free accompanist for solo sections, so why not have a try?

Learning to manage "butterflies in the stomach" is very helpful for anyone preparing for music exams too - the more you perform in front of other people, the less nervous you are likely to feel in front of an examiner!

The Music Festival offers three non-competitive solo "Mini Recital" sections that give performers the opportunity to perform under similar conditions to our competitive sections, in a more relaxed atmosphere. Each section concludes with a mini master class.

N01 Two of Us - Duets

Duet any instrument and/or voice. 12 years & under.

N02 Two of Us - Duets

Duet, any instrument and/or voice. 16 years and under.

N03 Solo instrument, including voice

AMEB Grades Prelim – 2 or equivalent†

N04 Solo instrument, including voice

AMEB Grades 3 – 4 or equivalent†

N05 Solo instrument, including voice

AMEB Grades 5 and above†

You don't have to be doing the AMEB syllabus, but your piece should be of an equivalent standard. Please check with your music teacher if you are not sure.

There is plenty of time to practice and polish your favourite pieces between now and August, so put your entry in as soon as entries open. You gain valuable performance experience, and receive a Certificate of Performance! You also get an Adjudicator's report to get valuable and encouraging feedback, and this well help you in your preparation for any future music exam or performance.
