CERC's California COVID-19 Poll Political and Economic Analysis

Dear Friends,

These are trying times for all of us, especially the healthcare heroes, those in public safety, and even the folks working the front lines at Costco, Target and other stores. We salute your hard work while you stay safe.

Competitive Edge is hard at work as well. I wanted to share the results of our California COVID-19 Poll. It will be in four parts. Please visit our website for political analysis and economic analysis released today.

Key takeaways that will likely be tomorrow’s headlines…
  • COVID-19 is generating generational battle lines, as voters 40 and younger sense the federal government’s actions will be worse than the cure BUT those older than 76 are generally A-OK with them.

  • Another age-based finding: those 67+ are fairly blasé about fallout from COVID-19 hurting their pocket book – only 28% give that a high probability – but 48% of those younger than that say it’s highly likely they’ll “lose significant income” (7% already have).

  • While Californians – Republicans included(!) -- toast Governor Newsom’s approach to COVID-19, most expect his lockdown to be over before Cinco de Mayo. If it extends beyond that, his halo may tarnish.

  • The Trump Administration’s approach ONLY gets the thumbs-up from Republicans.

The personal/social story comes out tomorrow. And then on the weekend, we have some “lighter” results looking at the impact of the coronavirus on the cancellation and postponement of pro and amateur sports.

Stay safe and healthy,

John Nienstedt
President
