The Edgy Interview: Political Consultant John Hoy

John Hoy is a San Diego politcal consultant who takes a thoughtfully methodical approach to winning elections. No bluster or BS. We've had the pleasure of working with John on big wins like Lorie Zapf for San Diego City Council and Jan Goldsmith for San Diego City Attorney.

We interviewed John to learn a little bit more about him, from favorite music, books and movies, to his first lucky break and who shapes his thinking on politics.

Business Forecast: San Diego's Minimum Wage Blues (may not be the kind you think)

CERC conducts the San Diego Business Forecast, hosted by the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce Business Forecast and sponsored by San Diego Private Bank. In addition to measuring business confidence each month, we poll San Diego businesses on a relevant topic. Last month we explored reactions to the upcoming minimum wage increase and learned that 29 percent of San Diego businesses anticipate having to counteract the effect of the increase and make significant changes to mitigate the cost. Fourteen percent will by raising prices or adding a surcharge, 8% will cut employee hours, 3% will lay-off workers, 2% will automate and 1% will move operations out of the state. All told, the minimum wage increase will hurt 14% of workers and about 37% of the folks it was designed to help.
