Edgy Interview: Oceanside City Councilman Jerry Kern

Jerry Kern (center) and friends enjoy the trains at the North County Model Railroad Society
This month we interviewed Oceanside City Councilman Jerry Kern, whom CERC helped when he beat a labor union-backed recall effort in 2009. That win continues to be one of CERC’s favorite triumphs. Jerry shares his thoughts on San Diego's housing crisis, California education reform and competitive eating.

CERC Speaks Spanish: New El Paso Call Center Expands Our Bilingual Capabilities

We're excited to now offer greatly expanded and enhanced Spanish language research capabilities through our El Paso call center. One of El Paso’s many attractive features is its heavy concentration of bilingual speakers. Now more than half of our El Paso interviewing team is fluently bilingual English-Spanish!

This positions CERC to leverage the Spanish language best practices we developed in San Diego, with our bigger bilingual team in El Paso, for best-in-class Spanish language polling and market research. If you'd like to learn more about our bilingual capabilities, please reach out to us at:

CERC Proudly Joins the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce

John Nienstedt (left) with Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce CEO Richard Dayoub

We had the pleasure of meeting with CEO Richard Dayoub and the Greater El Paso Chamber team this last month, to strengthen our ties and meet with other businesses in the area. We were well-received in the Chamber's downtown office, right next to beautiful Southwest University Park (home of the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Padres’ AAA team).

We wish Richard the best of luck as he wraps up his 13-year leadership role at the Greater El Paso Chamber at the end of this year, to spend more time with his wife and consult with a wide range of U.S. Chambers of Commerce.

Ask the Guru
Q. What’s the deal with cell phones and surveys?  No one has a landline anymore and you can’t call cell phones, so how do you get an accurate sample?
A. You sound so sure of yourself, grasshopper, yet there is much you do not know and even less you understand.
Most voters still have landlines and use them. Only about 25% of California’s active voter households are cell phone-only, and, yes, we do call those households. It is illegal to call a cell phone using an automated dialer, so we call them the old-fashioned way: by hand. And, to generate maximum coverage of the electorate, we survey the roughly 10% of voters who have an e-mail address but no phone number using a proprietary on-line method.
You see, acquiring an accurate sample is possible but not easy.  As my buddy Confucius says, “all good things are difficult to achieve.”

CERC Great Interviewer Rewards Program Winner: Frank Botello

We're happy to announce that Frank Botello, a 21 year old native El Paso who has been doing a great job at our El Paso call center, has won this new bike as part of our rewards program for fantastic interviewers.

Frank looks forward to riding his bike around the local neighborhoods, and appreciates the flexible work hours at CERC. We wish him some good rides!
