Edgewater Crew Monthly Update

January 2023

From the Board...

Spring season is upon us, the kids are gearing up for racing season, and we are looking forward to our first regatta, the Opening Day Regatta in Fellsmere on 2/18. Remember that if you have any questions about practice, regattas, or how your children are doing with the sport, please do not hesitate to reach out to Coach Michelle. You can email her at coachmichelle@edgewatercrew.org. This is a very busy season and I know it can be an adjustment for some of our rowers.

In other news, our Boathouse Benefit is right around the corner and we hope you all can join us! Parents, alumni, coaches, and any Edgewater Crew supporter is invited to join us for this fun, adult-only event. Below is a flyer with more information. Purchase tickets today! We hope to see you at our Row Down!
We are also still looking for auction donation items. If you have anything that you would like to donate (goods, services.... anything!), please fill out our silent auction donation form.

Junior Eagles
Our Spring session for middle schoolers has begun! We had 26 rowers out the first night of practice. We can't wait to see what they do this season. If you know anyone in grades 6-8 who might be interested in learning to row, please invite them out for our next Jeagles session. For general questions, email junioreagles@edgewatercrew.org. Or if you know someone ready to sign up, just share this registration form.

Alumni
Alumni - we have a group of people organizing an Edgewater Crew 60th anniversary event. If you're interested in being notified about alumni events, please fill out this Alumni Form so we can be in touch with you.

Masters
The Edgewater Masters is also gearing up for their racing season, but they are always looking for men and women over the age of 21 to join their team. All experience levels are welcome. If you are interested, see our website for more information. You can also email masters@edgewatercrew.org.

Senior Spotlight

Name: Riley Olivero
Nickname: Grandma

Hobbies: Playing ultimate frisbee, hanging out with friends

Plans after high school: Rowing for Stetson University

Long term goals: That is a good question. I wish I had a solid answer for that but right now I really don’t know.

Favorite memory: Favorite memories would have to be car rides to practice, every practice, every race, and everything in between. I have truly loved it all!

Name: Jackson Frazier
Nickname: Action

Hobbies (outside of crew): Camping/traveling, and eating.

What motivates you as an athlete or a student? Knowing that I’ve got my teammates back and that they’ve got mine. I also enjoy getting stronger and faster, making everything I do count.

What are your plans after high school (college/job/trade school)? I’ll be going to FSU and most likely be on pre-med track there. I also hope to keep rowing throughout my life.

Do you have any long term goals you are willing to share? I want to win States in the Men’s Varsity 4+ this year and I hope to become a doctor someday.

Favorite memory from rowing with Edgewater Crew: All of them, but choosing one I would say the trip to Philly and New Jersey and placing second at Nationals with some of my best friends.

A few weeks into our spring season and we have continued to work on our technical training and to build the aerobic base needed for the upcoming spring racing. Crew camp was a successful weekend full of rowing practices to support that training and time for our rowers to support one another as a team. Over the next few weeks, we will be preparing to compete in our first regatta of the spring season. Practices will be demanding, so not only will their time at the boathouse be important but how they spend their time away from it just as much. Rowers will need to manage their time to balance practice, their school work and other activities outside of crew to allow themselves to get proper rest both mentally and physically. Although our team size is small, the commitment to one another is anything but. I look forward to our rowers continued hard work and dedication to increase our speed as we begin this spring racing season.

Alumni of the Month - Jen Figueroa

Name: Jen Figueroa
Years rowed with Edgewater: 1994-1996 Current job/career: Realtor College Attended: University of Charleston Did you row in college: Yes
What motivated you as an athlete: Competition and wanting to feel good and be healthy
How did crew improve your life? Crew changed my life forever. It added so much joy and focus to my life and the friendships have been long-lasting.
Favorite memory of rowing with Edgewater Crew: Getting 2nd at Nationals in the Jr 8+ in 1995. I was still so new to rowing that I didn't realize what a big deal it was and how it would unravel until the last 30 strokes. It hit me in the sprint and all I could think about was emptying all that I had left and staying clean. It was an unforgettable experience.
Anything else you would like to add: If you love rowing and you stopped because of a graduation or an injury or because life got too busy, find your way back. There is no reason not to row if you love it. Don't put it off or feel like you have to erg for 6 months and then come back. Just come back. Life is too short to not do what you love. You may have to do it in the dark at an ungodly hour, but that's ok. Get back out there.

Support Edgewater Crew

Looking for ways to support Edgewater Crew? You can always donate to our Go Fund Me or PayPal accounts.
We are trying to raise money to help grow our team and to give our rowers new experiences to help them be more competitive. We are looking to raise money to help with additional scholarships, recruitment, new boats, rowing equipment, and travel to competitive regattas in and out of state.

Our team is not sponsored financially by Orange County Public Schools and unlike many of our competitors, we are limited to our small scholastic zone for recruiting. Edgewater High School is a small public high school with 60% of the student body considered economically disadvantaged. Our rowers must come from this school zone and in order to grow our team and provide new opportunities to these students, we will need additional funding.

As a registered 501, (c)(3) charitable, educational, non-profit corporation, donations made to Edgewater Crew (Orlando Rowing Association) are tax-deductible in most circumstances. Check with a tax professional to confirm if there are any exceptions in your case.

Want a bigger role as part of our crew?

Donate $15,000 for boat naming rights OR $1000 to sponsor a scholarship for a rower. For more information, email 1stvp@edgewatercrew.org.

We have rowing programs for all levels - middle school, high school, and masters. Register now and see what it's all about!
