Dear beekeeper,

In the Netherlands, it appears that in the 2015-2016 season winter mortality was at a very acceptable level. That was certainly the case for bee colonies that were given Ferro-Bee® in the autumn. Just as in the 2014-2015 season, Ferro-Bee® has proven to be a fully-fledged alternative to the ‘varroa treatments’ that have been promoted for many years now.

Ferro-Bee®
Ferro-Bee® is a dietary supplement for bees containing iron; it is administered through the sugar feed. Beekeepers who administered Ferro-Bee® to their bee colonies in the autumn reported that in most cases no winter mortality was observed. In accordance with the instructions for Ferro-Bee®, almost all these beekeepers refrained from administering additional treatments to the bees. The conclusion is that at least an equally effective result can be achieved with Ferro-Bee® alone as with the chemical treatments containing organic acids (formic acid, oxalic acid) and thymol that have been administered for many years and that have considerable side effects on the bees. In cases where colonies were lost, Ferro-Bee® was usually administered alongside an additional treatment.

Administering Ferro-Bee®
Almost perfect results were obtained by beekeepers who administered Ferro-Bee® via the winter feed in portions over a longer period or in a single dose. Notably, this also applied to beekeepers who had experienced 100% winter mortality in the past, for example in areas with very cold winters. It is also possible to administer Ferro-Bee® as a powder.

How does it work?
Administering Ferro-Bee® results in the bees being more active. Increased mite fall also occurs. However, there are still more ways in which Ferro-Bee® has a favorable effect on the bee colonies.

The overall mechanism of how Ferro-Bee® works is beginning to be come clear. There are indications that it may influence the microbiological composition and have an influence on reproduction. At present we cannot say definitively which other effects of Ferro-Bee® have a role to play in the total the favorable effect. Up to now, no adverse effects of Ferro-Bee® have been reported.

Research
During our research we have paid a great deal of attention to the processes that take place in bee colonies which lead to mortality and colonies disappearing in the autumn and winter. The real cause of colony loss, also in the summer, is not exactly as the branch has understood this up to now. Varroa is mainly a consequence, not a cause. Various links to other useful measures that contribute to successful overwintering have also been found. See our website for a more detailed explanation »
What is Ferro-Bee®?
Ferro-Bee® is a ferrous formulation. It also contains components that promote iron absorption. Ferro-Bee® has been developed based on our fundamental scientific insights into the processes that cause bees die and disappear. Read more about Ferro-Bee® »
