Dear beekeeper,

Preparing for the winter is an important process for bee colonies. Until now, preparing the bees for the winter has not been described precisely in a scientific manner.
We would therefore like to ask you a few questions about winter feeding and reproduction in your bee colonies in this period of the year (autumn 2015).

It is a short online survey with clear questions. The questions, divided into five topics, are about winter feeding (4), the occurrence of colony loss in the autumn (6), queens (3), brood (3), and treatments (2).

Brief explanation of the survey and questions
The aim of this online survey is primarily to find out whether winter feeding was successful and what factors determine this. This questionnaire is derived from our preliminary research into the factors that play a role in preparing the colony for the winter. It is conceivable that this survey will lead to a new beekeeping method. It is therefore important that you complete the questionnaire.

Your answers about preparing your bees for the winter can help answer the question as to what exactly happens to the bees, bee colonies and queens when preparing for the winter.

Completing the questionnaire
We think it will you take only 5 to 10 minutes to answer the 18 questions in the survey. It may be that you cannot answer all the questions, for instance because you can't remember a thing or two. That's not a problem, please just skip that question. For each topic you will have the opportunity to enter an explanation or additional information.

The questionnaire will remain open until 6 December. Please complete it before this date.

For an overview of the questions please click here. If you read through the questions in advance, you will know what to expect when you go to the questionnaire itself.

Reporting
We will distribute the provisional results before 31 December 2015 in a newsletter, and we will publish the final results before 31 January 2016.

Note
We will publish the data anonymously (your joint answers) without restrictions. Only in this way can we guarantee that the survey is fully transparent and that it is possible to comment on the interpretation of the data.

Please forward
Please forward this mail to your fellow beekeepers, or if you are secretary of a local beekeepers association or regional beekeepers society, please send this on to your members so they too can contribute to this survey.
