Eating for a Healthy Spine!

Have you ever heard the saying "You are what you eat"? We at First State Spine believe it's actually "Your spine is what you eat!"  Your diet can have an impact on the health and strength of your spine.  Some great vitamins and foods for your spine are:

  • Vitamin A (helps repair tissue and in the formation of bone)
    • Found in beef, dairy products, orange-colored fruits (apricots, nectarines), and orange/green-colored vegetables (carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach)
  • Vitamin B12 (necessary for healthy bone marrow and for the body to grow and fuction).
    • Found in meat products (liver, fish, red meat), dairy products, eggs.
  • Vitamin C (necessary for the development of collagen, allowing cells to for into tissue)
    • Found in fruits (strawberries, kiwi, citrus, tomatoes) and many vegetables, (broccoli, spinach, red and green peppers).
  • Vitamin D (helps improve calcium absorption, developing strong, healthy bones)
    • Naturally occurring in egg yolks and fish oils, most brands of fortified milk in the US; can also be obtained by spending time in the sunlight.
  • Vitamin K (needed for bones to properly use calcium)
    • Found in liver, pork, green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, broccoli), and dairy products.
  • Iron (needed for cells to remain healthy, helping them receive oxygen and dispel carbon dioxide)
    • Found in meat products (liver, pork, fish, shellfish, red meat and poultry), lentils, beans, soy, eggs, grains, and green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, broccoli).
  • Magnesium (important for the relaxation and contracting of muscles)
    • Found in whole grains and whole-grain breads, beans, seeds, nuts, potatoes, avocados, bananas, kiwi fruit, shrimp, and green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, broccoli).
  • Calcium (essential for bone health and maintaining necessary levels of bone mass)
    • Found in dairy products, dark green leafy vegetables, tofu, peanuts, peas, black beans and baked beans, and some types of fish (salmon and sardines)

You should check with your physician to discuss whether these foods are safe to be consumed based on your health history. If pain persists and a specialized diet is not helping please call First State Spine to schedule an appointment today - (302) 731-2888.

Success Stories

"I was very impressed with Dr. Ginsberg. He spent quite a bit of time explaining everything in detail. He may be young, but he knows medicine like someone twice his age. He is very direct and answered all my questions. He is very personable and asked me a lot of questions. Most doctors don’t do that. He had a plan in place for me very quickly but also gave me other options to consider. I highly recommend him for any orthopaedic needs and look forward to my next visit. You will not be disappointed with this doctor."

"Dr. Rudin is very professional and knowledgeable. I had a microdiscectomy for a large lumbar disc herniation. All of my pre-operative symptoms resolved and I was able to return to work in 1 week. His office is very clean and his staff is very nice and professional. I would highly recommend him to any patient that has neck or back pain. He’s the best!"
