Sports 'n Science launches a new pilot program

The Sports 'n Science (SnS) program began in 2012 as a partnership between the CSME and the University of Utah Athletics Department. This year, SnS launched a pilot middle school program to teach students about the science behind sports. We would like to thank the Utes Overnight Basketball Camp and Club U Varsity for participating in our pilot program in August. SnS is seeking partners, including teachers, schools, camps, and after-school programs, for future SnS pilot programs. Contact for more information.

Math for America Utah welcomes 2013 cohort

Math for America Utah continues to grow as a new group of fellows joined MfA Utah this past summer. The CMSE is excited to welcome Jessie Barrow, Michael Bolton, Clayton Call, Kaitlyn Nordin, Izumi Okamura, Lisett Sierra, and Samuel Wood attending the UofU with  Kimberly Ammons, Katie Dambrink, Danika Foley, Matthew Lewis and Marissa Utterberg, attending USU. They began the program summer semester by taking classes towards earning a Level IV Math Endorsement. These twelve fellows will continue with licensure courses while student teaching with experienced mentors throughout the academic year. Five current fellows, Emma Chandler, Greg Butterfield, Rosalie Christenson, Ralph Davis and Jessica Millar, have recently graduated with an MS in Mathematics or MS in Mathematics (Teaching).  We are excited for their great accomplishment, and happy to still have them be a part of Math for America through cohort meetings and professional development workshops.

MSSST Earth Science featured in Geology and Geophysics newsletter

The Center for Science and Mathematics Education, in collaboration with the Department of Geology & Geophysics, launched a new degree program for middle and high school teachers of Earth Science in 2012.  The new Masters of Science for Secondary School Teachers (MSSST) in Earth Science degree aims to elevate teachers’ understanding of Geology and Earth Science and their ability to prepare K-12 students for the challenges of an increasing population, dwindling energy and water resources, changing climate conditions, and the impacts of natural hazards.

The MSSST Earth Science program provides teachers with training in both geological and pedagogical (teaching) skills that will enable them to teach their students about the relevance, applications and methods of geoscience.  Teachers in the program take foundational courses in Physical Geology, Geophysics, Chemistry, and Field Methods, but the courses are specifically designed to incorporate teaching practice and classroom application.

Currently, there are 17 teachers enrolled in the MSSST Earth Science program and these students will graduate from the Geology & Geophysics Department with a very different educational experience than that of traditional master’s students.  However, the skills they develop will be well suited to their needs and professional goals as teachers.

2013 Science Filmmaker's Workshop is open for registration

The CSME's 2013 Science Filmmaking Workshop will be held October 14-16 (Beginner) and October 17-18 (Practicum). The workshop is open to University of Utah faculty, staff, and students, in addition to science professionals from the outside community. Participants in the workshop will learn how to communicate science and/or math concepts through film. For information regarding fees and registration, contact the CSME at 801-585-1985.
