Go Napier Girls!  Recycling took place at their swimming sports this year thanks to the Enviro Team and members of the Youth Environment Council.
Kia ora koutou,  Seaweek 2017 officially finished on Sunday 5 March. HBRC held its annual clean-up at Waitangi Regional Park on Saturday 4 March. Check out the photo and statistics below.  Also doing a beach clean up for Seaweek was Eskdale School.  They headed to the end of Franklin Road in Bayview on Wednesday 1 March.

There are quite a few "DAYS" this month and while we don't have any official activities around them they are an opportunity to widen our view and look out into the world at what others may be undertaking.  Two days that are happening here in Hawke's Bay are promoted later in this newsletter.

Seaweek 2017

Here is our action man Cam.  On-site for the beach clean-up at Waitangi Regional Park last Saturday 4 March.  Over 160 people joined together to clean up this area..  All sorts was collected, including wire bed springs and a small safe, which was delivered to the Police Station.

This year the rubbish weighed in at 580kgs, down from 650 Kgs in 2016.  Cam from the HBRC Operations team, based at Guppy Road, delivered it all to Henderson Road Transfer Station.  Thanks to Hastings District Council for the complimentary drop off.  The recycling was sorted on site by members of the Youth Environment Team and the bins were supplied by Napier City Council. Special thanks to Malcolm and the Napier City Cleaning Crew.

It was an awesome morning and a great team effort.  A sausage and a hot cross bun was supplied to the volunteers to round up the morning.

Thank you to all who took part.
Eskdale School undertook their own smaller beach clean-up on Wednesday 1 March.  In a short time they collected a surprising amount from their closest beach at the end of Franklin Road in Bayview.  Great work Mrs Rolls and Mr Moriarty for coordinating.

In true Enviroschools style this greengold Enviroschool took all the rubbish back to school to sort. Ka pai Eskdale!

Youth Environment Council

Youth Environment Council 2017 was in action at the Waitangi beach clean up on Saturday 4 March. Taking photos, staffing the recycling bins and cooking the BBQ, as well as picking up their share of litter. Great team effort for their first outing this year.

If you have any environmental action ideas you think youth should be tackling then drop us a line

Great news for Enviroschools Hawke's Bay with a new funder on board.  Hastings District Council has met a shortfall of $10,000 in this financial year.  Dominic Salmon from the Hastings District Council’s waste minimisation programme says Enviroschools is a great fit for HDC’s programme as it plays a big role in creating awareness of key waste minimisation messages.  All local authorities receive waste levy funding from Central Government to fund waste minimisation activities and services.  As the Enviroschools programme reaches so many Hastings Schools, it is a great opportunity to ensure quality waste minimisation messages are delivered.

Stevie Schmidt, Open Spaces Development Officer, captured here with the parks trailer and a keen group from Lindisfarne College.  Planting along the Karamu at Havelock North.
As a member of the HBRC Open Spaces Team, Stevie coordinates a lot of the planting days held over the winter months. The team is currently working on community planting days for winter 2017.  These are a great opportunity to come together and help a section of the environment with some native planting.

Stevie leading the way down the Karamu on a recognisance trip in November 2016. Just another way of inspecting our waterways.
