Call for pre-proposals: Energy-Health-Natural Disasters nexus in African Cities

We're working with ICSU and NASAC to support 10 African research projects on the Energy-Health-Natural Disasters nexus in African cities.

This is the first call of the 5-year “Leading Integrated Research for Agenda 2030 in Africa” programme funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). The programme seeks to increase the production of high-quality, integrated, solutions-oriented research on global sustainability by early-career scientists in Africa. Funded projects are expected to generate new solutions-oriented knowledge that will help develop new urban paradigms in Africa and make African cities more resilient, adaptable and healthier.

The call for pre-proposals aims to identify collaborative research projects in Africa interested to explore inter-relationships across at least two domains of the nexus. Successful applicants will be invited to join a training workshop on integrated research in Nairobi, Kenya, on 3-7 October 2016. Applicants should have no more than 10 years’ work experience following their PhDs or equivalent research experience.

The deadline for pre-proposal submission is 15 August 2016 (18:00 CET).

Transformations to Sustainability webinar
Researchers from the Transformations to Sustainability programme recently took part in a webinar to present the three funded Transformative Knowledge Networks, and to start a discussion on solutions-oriented social science research in practice. Watch the webinar and access speakers' slides.
Video from T2S conference session
A special session on Transformations to Sustainability was held at the Undisciplined Environments conference in March 2016. Catch up on videos from the event with Leah Temper, speaking on academic-activist co-produced knowledge for environmental justice; David Kronlid, speaking on transgressive social learning for social-ecological sustainability in times of climate change, and Marco Armiero, ('Justainability') speaking on grassroots initiatives to merge social and environmental justice.
Reflections and recommendations from transdisciplinarity workshops
A new report highlights recommendations for a transdisciplinary (TD) training programme, including why TD research is needed and what it entails; ontological, epistemological and methodological considerations, and research strategies and paradigms. It follows workshops organized earlier this year in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Download the report
