Call for pre-proposals: Energy-Health-Natural Disasters nexus in African Cities

On the Move - Global Migrations, Challenges and Reponses

On the move – Global migrations, challenges and responses is public conference to address current challenges around migration and integration worldwide, and to discuss policy responses and the role of science in addressing these issues. It will take place on October 26 2016 in Oslo, Norway, immediately following the ISSC General Assembly. 

Plenary speakers include Saskia Sassen, Columbia University; Jayati Ghosh, Jawaharlal Nehru University; Jan Egeland, Norwegian Refugee Council; Anna Triandafyllidou, European University Institute, and Knut Kjeldstadli, University of Oslo.

This public conference is organized by the ISSC together with the Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences and the Comparative Research Programme on Poverty - CROP. Register for free by September 15th. 

ISSC General Assembly, Oslo
The ISSC will hold an Extraordinary GA together with the International Council for Science (ICSU) on October 24 2016 and the 30th ISSC GA on October 25 2016, in Oslo, Norway. During the Extraordinary GA members of both organizations will be asked to vote on the principle of the merger of ISSC and ICSU and the creation of a new, single science organization for the social and natural sciences. Delegates to the GA can register for the meetings and book hotel accommodation online. The meetings are being generously hosted by the Research Council of Norway. Please register by 15 September 2016.
Submissions open for Ethnografilm 2017
Submissions are open for the 2017 Ethnografilm festival, which will take place April 11 - 15 2017, in Paris, France. The Ethnografilm festival is a celebration of academic and ethnographic film-making. It aims to enhance our understanding of the social world through film, with films that describe patterns of living throughout the world to educate and entertain. In a new video, festival director Wes Shrum tells us more about Ethnografilm and why it's unique. Ethnografilm is co-sponsored by the ISSC and the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S). For more details on how to submit films, please see the Ethnografilm website. Please submit before September 1st for the lowest rate ($25/$35).
Save the Date: WSSR2016 Report launch
Save the Date - The World Social Science Report 2016: Challenging Inequalities – Pathways to a Just World will be launched on Thursday, 22 September 2016, at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Stockholm, Sweden. The event is hosted by the Swedish Secretariat for Environmental Earth System Sciences (SSEESS). Register now. Can't attend? Don't worry - the event in Stockholm will be live-streamed - more details will follow in our September newsletter.  
Future Earth seeking new Committee members
There's a unique opportunity to get involved with the development of Future Earth, a 10-year international research programme on global change. Future Earth, which is co-sponsored by the ISSC, is seeking new members of its Science and Engagement Committees to be appointed by December 1 2016. Science Committee members advise on generating excellent, solutions-based research on global change, including on social science research. The Engagement Committee advises Future Earth on co-designing and co-producing research with a range of societal partners. The appointment process is being led by the Future Earth Governing Council, which includes the ISSC as a member. Social scientists with relevant experience are warmly encouraged to apply for positions on either committee by September 11th
New website for Open Data-Big Data campaign
Scientific organizations worldwide are invited to visit a new website to endorse ‘Open Data in a Big Data World’ – the accord for open access to publicly funded research data developed by Science International, an initiative of four international science organizations including the ISSC. Add your organization's support.

Executive Secretary, CODESRIA: The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) invites applications from suitably qualified African scholars for the position of Executive Secretary in its pan-African Secretariat located in Dakar, Senegal. This position, which will fall vacant in 2017, is the most senior management post in the Executive Secretariat and the successful candidate will be expected to function as the leader of the institution and a diverse team of staff under the overall supervision of the Executive Committee of the Council.
All applications must be received by Thursday 15th September 2016.

Executive Director, IAIThe Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) is seeking a new executive director to take over when the current executive director steps down from his term in 2017. The IAI is a regional, intergovernmental institution that promotes scientific research and capacity building on the extent, causes, and consequences of global change in the Americas and beyond. 
All applications must be received by Friday 7th October 2016.
