International Social Science Council (ISSC)

We're excited to give you an update on what’s new in the ongoing planning process for the proposed merger between the ISSC and the International Council for Science (ICSU). The start of 2017 has seen two major milestones in the process with the meetings of the Strategy Working Group (SWG) and Transition Task Force (TTF) in Paris.

The groups had been tasked respectively with proposing a high-level strategy and structure for a new, merged organization.

The SWG opened with a one-and-a-half day workshop to discuss the future of global science, and possible roles of a prospective new council for the natural and social sciences. All candidates nominated by ICSU and ISSC members for the group were invited to the workshop, together with a number of additional experts. See here for a summary, including photos, of the event. This was followed by an additional one-and-a-half day SWG working session to further refine and synthesize ideas. A strong consensus emerged from these discussions about the need for a unified, global voice that speaks and stands for the value of all science (from fundamental to stakeholder-engaged science) and its continued advancement, throughout the world and for the benefit of all. A brief report is available here.

An initial document outlining key principles and priorities for the new strategy will be sent to members for comment before the end of March.

The TTF met after the SWG events to discuss proposed structures for a new council fit for the 21st century, drawing on thinking that emerged from the Strategy Working Group workshop and meeting. Work streams and actions resulting from the meeting are available here.

Further documentation relating to the meetings and the transition planning process is available here

Call for funding proposals: Transformations to Sustainability

The Belmont Forum, NORFACE and the ISSC, as the Transformations to Sustainability funders, have together launched a new funding programme under the banner of “Transformations to Sustainability” (T2S).

This T2S call will contribute to re-structuring the broad field of sustainability research by placing social science and humanities at the heart of interdisciplinary research, in a step-change in scale and scope for research programming on this topic. The programme is structured around three themes; every research project should focus on at least one of these themes:
  • Governance and institutional dimensions of transformations to sustainability
  • Economy and finance of transformations to sustainability
  • Well-being, quality of life, identity, and social and cultural values in relation to transformations to sustainability
The programme also aims to tap into and develop existing knowledge by facilitating new collaborations between countries which are not frequently involved in large-scale international collaborative research efforts, notably low- and middle-income countries. With the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the ISSC is participating in the programme with dedicated funding for research teams in low- and lower-middle-income countries.

Projects funded under the research programme will be led by a Main Applicant from the social sciences or humanities, and project teams will involve researchers in at least three eligible countries. The funding available for this T2S programme over a period of three years has been set at a minimum of €13 million across the international funding partners.

Transformations to Sustainability programme networks gain momentum

The 'T-Learning' network engages with communities interested in transforming their situations towards sustainability through learning together. In 2017, activities have taken place in Colombia, Malawi, South Africa and Vietnam.

A report from the recent Conflict Transformation and Environmental Justice Think-Tank held at the University of East Anglia (UEA), UK and attended by members of 'ACKnowl-EJ' network is now available to download.

Pathways network partners started the year with events on access to solar PV solutions through mobile payments (Kenya); the availability of clean water and the problem of waste water in Gurgaon (India); and on developments on open source seeds (UK).
