New Mexico Research Symposium 2021 Recap

It is fair to stay this year's symposium was unlike any other. Held in, the week-long event explored living on Mars, robot trust issues, and celebrated exceptional students, researchers, and teachers from across the state. One of the true highlights occured on Friday when seven NM SMART Grid Center students (Jesse Kascmarski, Anhao Xiang, Seyyed Ali Ghorashi, Dawn Walaitis, Erick Draayer, Rudy Montoya, and Nitin Bhandari) showed off their communication skills by sharing their research in three minutes using a single slide. Read on for event highlights and poster competition winners...

NM SMART Grid Center Externships (MS and PhD students supported by NM EPSCoR)
Externships are funding opportunities for graduate students to spend time at a national lab, industry or research facility, government agency, or higher education institution other than the student's host institution.  Amount: Up to $3,000. 
Applications Accepted on a Rolling Basis    
American Association of University Women Fellowships (Women)
All of the AAUW opportunities allow funds to be used for dependent child care
Selected Professions Fellowships - $5K - $18K 
Publication Grants in Engineering, Medicine & Science - $10K - $35K
Deadline: December 1    
Ford Foundation Fellowships (predoc, dissertation, postdoc)
Intended to increase diversity in the nation's college and university faculties. STEM disciplines eligible.

Predoc Fellowship - $27K (for 3 years)
Dissertation Fellowship - $28K (1 year)
Postdoc Fellowships - $50K (1 year)
Deadlines: December 9 & 16   
Call for Proposals: Infrastructure Seed Awards
Goal: To financially support transformative research and capacity building across NM’s academic institutions in emerging smart grid areas. The awards can be used to purchase research and teaching equipment and to pay for student researcher salaries, research supplies, and student conference travel. Amount: $50K. **Participation in current NM EPSCoR project is not required!**
Deadline: December 13     
Call for Proposals: Collaborative Innovation Working Group Proposals
Goal: To financially support collaborations (meetings, trainings, groups) across NM's academic institutions in emerging smart grid areas. Any individual from an NM academic institution or national lab may submit a proposal. **Participation in current NM EPSCoR project is not required!** Amount: Up to $7,500.
Proposals Accepted on a Rolling Basis    
NSF: EPSCoR Track 2 - Focused Collaborations
Goal: Facilitate collaborations and emphasize the recruitment/development of early career faculty and STEM education and workforce development on the theme shown. Project must involved investigators from two or more EPSCoR jurisdictions; one submission per organization.
Amount: Two jurisdictions 
 $1M/yr up to 4 yrs. Three or more → $1.5M/yr up to 4 yrs
Theme: Advancing research towards industries of tomorrow to ensure economic growth for EPSCoR jurisdictions
Letter of Intent: December 20    
NSF: EPSCoR Track-4 Research Fellows
Goal: To build a foundation for research collaboration; Provides fellowships for non-tenured faculty in EPSCoR states to have extended research visits to to the nation's premier private, governmental, or academic research centers. ← Like a CAREER award only open to researchers in EPSCoR jurisdictions.
Requirements: Limited to three submissions per organization
Amount: Up to $300,000 total for up to 2 yrs

Deadline: April 12   
Goal: Part of the same solicitation as the NSF Track-4 Research Fellows, the NASA track (a.k.a FAST) focuses on faculty from specific institutions of higher education to collaborate with researchers at the NASA participating research centers. ← It is also only open to researchers in EPSCoR jurisdictions.
Requirements: Limited to six submissions per organization
Amount: Up to $300,000 total for up to 2 yrs

Deadline: April 12
