The LeadWest Advocate provides a summary insight into LeadWest's activities; including information on achievement of agreed priorities in the strategic action plan for Melbourne’s west, upcoming events in Melbourne's west, and opportunities for us to work together for the betterment of our region.
We've had a positive response to the first two issues of the LeadWest Advocate and have had great feedback from stakeholders who are reading the e-news. Visits to LeadWest’s website have increased so much that we now need extra bandwidth! So far in 2014 there’s been over 3,000 unique visitors to LeadWest’s website. LeadWest’s Twitter accounts are ‘followed’ by more than 2,000 people (including many in the media and politics) and posts on our Facebook page are reaching hundreds more each week. LeadWest’s ‘audience’ continues to grow, demonstrating that many people are interested in Melbourne’s west and what we are doing to advocate for the whole region.

The Western Agenda focuses on uniting leaders in Melbourne’s west and workingtogether to create a prosperous, sustainable, healthy and fair region.
In understanding the need for an integrated “joined up” approach and maintaining a strong social fabric because there are so many intertwined issues; we work together on each of these seven threads:
Western Chances: As a proud supporter of Western Chances, LeadWest attended the annual scholarship awards Ceremony on 12 March where more than 200 young people from Melbourne's west were awarded Western Chances Scholarships. More information Brimbank Community Learning Strategy: Adopted by Council on Tuesday February 25, the new Brimbank Community Learning Strategy 2014 - 2017 (link) supports learning in all life phases and is a long term approach to improving the social and economic outcomes of individuals and the community. More information Melbourne's West Jobs: Expressions of Interest are sought from employers who would like to learn more about Melbourne's West Jobs and how it benefits job seekers and employers in Melbourne's west. Please email us by Monday March 31 if you are interested in attending an information session. Careers Expo: LeadWest is sponsoring two upcoming careers expo events in Melbourne's west. The WRICA Careers Expo is to be held at the Werribee Racecourse on Thursday May 15 and Friday May 16. The Brimbank Careers and Jobs Fair is to be held on May 28 at Club Italia on Furlong Road in Sunshine North.
THREAD 2: PRODUCTIVE ECONOMY
Melbourne's West Regional Economic Response Taskforce: At its meeting on March 12th, LeadWest's Board agreed to participate in the formation of a regional "economic response taskforce" that will provide regional coordination for the whole of government response to adjustment of the regional economy associated with the end of motor vehicle manufacturing in Melbourne's west. Open Innovation West: LeadWest has submitted an application for a Manufacturing Productivity Network grant to assist with the creation and operation of Open Innovation West, an initiative of the Western Melbourne Regional Development Australia Committee (WMRDA). More information Resources Connect: An Australian Government initiative, the Resources Connectcourse has been designed specifically for owners of small and medium businesses looking to supply to the resources and energy sector. THREAD 3: COMMUNITY WELLBEING
Preventing Violence Against Women and Children: Within Melbourne's west, vulnerable women at risk of family violence could be in greater danger without an urgent injection of funding. Women's Health West is one of a number of domestic violence services with programs at risk due to uncertainty surrounding a homelessness funding agreement between state and federal governments that expires in June 2014. Women's Health West: Maribyrnong City Council has recognised the contribution Women's Health West makes to the local community and the western region, offering a long term lease for a Council owned asset in Braybrook. The lease will ensure that women and children in the City of Maribyrnong and western region will continue to receive the vital and high quality services delivery by Women's Health West. Bring Jamie's Ministry of Food to Melbourne's West: Victoria University, Footscray has been announced as a finalist in the Jamie's Ministry of Food Pop Up Kitchen competition. Are you on Facebook? THREAD 4: SUSTAINED LIVEABILITY
Greening the West: Trees and vegetation are vital for liveable, healthy suburbs and provide many health, environmental and economic benefits. Greening the West is a regional partnership aiming to promote sustainable and health communities in Melbourne's west. LeadWest was a contributor to the Greening the West strategic plan, officially launched in November 2013.More information
Living Brooklyn Project: LeadWest participated in a workshop for theLiving Brooklyn Project, working together with stakeholders who use, influence or are affected by water at the Brooklyn Industrial Precinct. The aim of the workshop was to develop a Vision for a healthier, more prosperous future in the area, using water as the catalyst for change. The workshop output is being compiled into a comprehensive Vision Document, which will provide a foundation for the precinct's Integrated Water Management Strategy. WAGA: LeadWest have participated with WAGA and WMRDA in preparing a submission on the Issues Paper towards an Energy White Paper which was submitted to the Australian Government in February. The Energy White Paper will set out a coherent and integrated approach to energy policy to reduce cost pressures on households and businesses, improve Australia's international competitiveness and grow our export base and economic prosperity.
THREAD 5: ENABLING INFRASTRUCTURE
National Transport Commission: New Commissioners have been appointed to lead the NTC's work on national transport reform. More information Western Transport Alliance (WTA): Local government in Melbourne's west are taking a lead role in advocating for major transport improvements in the region through the Western Transport Alliance (WTA). The next meeting of the WTA (focus: freight) is scheduled for Thursday, April 24 from 8.30am - 10.30am at the Footscray Town Hall. All WTA members are welcome to attend. More information Infrastructure Projects: LeadWest has called on the Australian and Victorian Governments to foster economic growth in Melbourne's west through infrastructure investment in response to the Toyota closure announcement last week. THREAD 6: EXPERIENCE AND ENJOYMENT
Melbourne Now Exhibition at NGV: Special congratulations are extended to Western Chances Scholarship Award recipient Patrick Francis. Patrick is the only young person with a disability invited to exhibit Melbourne Nowat NGV Ian Potter Centre until March 23. Check out more about Patrick on his website. Wyndham Netball Association: Netball Victoria are hosting the first Melbourne Vixens clinic in Wyndham on March 27. The clinic is open to participants aged 8-17 years and requires online registration.
THREAD 7: REGIONAL LEADERSHIP
Hobsons Bay City Council Welcome New Councillor: Mayor of Hobsons Bay, Councillor Sandra Wilson has welcomed Jason Price as the new Councillor for Cherry Lake Ward. Councillor Price has been elected via a countback by the Victorian Electoral Commission following the resignation of Councillor Tony Briffa.
