In Memory of Russ Williams, Board Member

Photo of Russ WilliamsRuss Williams has been a member of the Boone County Family Resources Board of Directors for more than a dozen years. His service with the Elks Lodge 594 and support of the Elks Mobile Dental Unit for individuals with disabilities led him to become involved with BCFR. He wanted the Elks to do something special for the individuals and families supported by BCFR and helped initiate an annual picnic sponsored by the Elks. Each year he coordinated the volunteer efforts of his fellow Elks to grill the burgers and hot dogs and serve up all the fixings to around 500 persons. Read more...

The decision to move forward with a digital edition of the newsletter came as a recommendation from our Green Committee whose initiative is to seek ways for the agency to become more Earth-friendly and environmentally responsible.

And the Winner Is...

Graphic of movie clap board Earlier this year, BCFR announced a state-wide video contest in honor of developmental disabilities awareness. People were encouraged to submit videos that include positive images that put a fresh spin on the public’s view of people with developmental disabilities and what they contribute to our community. The goal of the contest was to help change negative assumptions about people with disabilities and help create inclusive communities for people of all abilities. Read more...

STEP Program Celebrates Graduates

Photo of STEP graduates In May, the Seamless Transition through Enhanced Partnership (STEP) program held its second graduation send-off for the five young adults who participated in the program this year. The STEP program, a partnership between Columbia Public Schools (CPS), Alternative Community Training (ACT), Vocational Rehabilitation, Boone Hospital Center, Boone County Family Resources (BCFR), and Central Missouri Regional Office, is designed to improve employment outcomes for youth with developmental disabilities. Larry Heads to the World Games

Photo of LarryIf ever there was a family that embodied the true spirit of the mission of Special Olympics, it’s the Stephens family. Bob and Janice encouraged their son, Larry, to be involved as soon as he was old enough to participate and they’ve never looked back. Larry has played golf, tennis, bocce, basketball, swimming and volleyball, and has won so many medals he is running out of space in his bedroom to display them all. Larry even received a high school letter from Hickman High School through his participation in Special Olympics. Read more...

Be sure to mark your calendars and save the date for the annual Boone County Family Resources Picnic sponsored by the Elks Lodge #594.

You and your family are invited to the Leech Pavilion at Bethel Park, 4500 Bethel Street, on Thursday, September 25, 2014 from 5-7 p.m.

The Elks will be serving up hot dogs and burgers with all the fixings.

In case of rain, the picnic will be held on Thursday, October 2nd.
