September 2017
Whoa, September flew by too fast! The month may have to end, but does sickle cell awareness have to? Absolutely not! We want sickle cell awareness 365 days a year.

Here are a few ways to keep the momentum going all year long. Ready?

1. Share sickle cell related articles.
Like this article: Every time it’s a battle’: In excruciating pain, sickle cell patients are shunted aside by STAT. This article was published earlier this month, but has all the elements of the timeless piece about patients battling mistreatment in hospitals. By sharing on your social media page(s) or platform(s), you are keeping sickle cell relevant, thus generating awareness.

2. Continue to participate in social media campaigns.

There are some sickle cell campaigns that continue throughout the duration of the year, such as #BoldLipsForSickleCell (wearing a bold color lipstick and posting a selfie under the hashtag). Nobody is going to get mad at you if you continue to wear red on Fridays (#redFridays #fightsicklecell), just make sure you state that it is for sickle cell awareness and use hashtags. Extra bonus points if you get friends and family to participate!

3. Educate your family and friends.

There are a number of ways you can do this such as reposting educational content on your social media account, or sharing your experiences as a person affected by sickle cell disease or trait. Host a booth at a local health fair or research what advocacy efforts are being held locally.

4. Join a local organization, hospital, support group, etc.

With many groups that promote sickle cell awareness, you're bound to do so through your work. You can especially do this by going out in the community and educating on behalf of these entities.

5. Wear your sickle cell gear.

It's one of the best ways to raise awareness without having to say a word. Of course, if somebody does ask you about sickle cell, be sure to have a educational response prepared. You'll find wearing your sickle cell gear can be great conversation starters.

There you have it! Pick your favorite(s) to raise awareness all year round.
