There are only two weeks remaining until the Federal Election. Earlier this month the Institute launched a campaign, Designing Australia’s Future, calling on members to join the Institute in challenging our political leaders to commit to meaningful change for Australia’s built environment. As part of this campaign we have written to the major political parties to get their position on the key policies the Institute advocates for. To date we have received a response from Labor and this has been added to our election campaign portal.

The presentation of this year’s awards takes place at the historic Locomotive Workshops at Australian Technology Park on Friday 1 July at 6:30pm. This promises to be a memorable night in a wonderfully spacious venue. The new seated dinner arrangement should be appealing, plus we have a star attraction in the wild and witty Judith Lucy as MC. I hope to see many NSW members at the architectural ‘night of the year.’

The 2016 federal election is underway and politicians are developing strategies designed to win your vote. We would like you to help out by starting a conversation with your local candidates, whether for the House of Representatives or the Senate.

The Institute has already asked the major parties about their positions on a range of issues, and we are awaiting  their responses, which we will then publish.

Launching the Paula Whitman Prize for Gender Equity

We are proud to announce the launch of the inaugural Paula Whitman Leadership in Gender Equity Prize. The prize aims to recognise exceptional leadership and an outstanding contribution to the advancement of gender equity in architectural practice, education and governance.

Invitations for Expressions of Interest in Sessional Teaching at UNSW Architecture
 
UNSW has always benefitted from strong links with architectural practice and practitioners who provide invaluable teaching and learning opportunities for our students. Currently we have over 200 sessional teaching staff working with us in the Faculty across all of our programs. Their contributions are vital to our inter-disciplinary educational paradigm. We are undergoing an exciting period of change at UNSW and to refresh and enliven our programs we would like broaden our cohort even further, from emerging practitioners to the most experienced with specialist skills. We invite you to respond to our call.

Built Environment Meet Parliament NSW
Thursday 11 August

Speakers: Jeff Speck, world-leading expert on walkable cities; introduced by the Institute’s National President, Ken Maher. Sarah Aldridge, Chair, NSW Country Division, will participate in a panel on regional towns and cities.

Sponsored by The Hon Rob Stokes MP, Minister for Planning, the focus of BEMP NSW in 2016 will be on presenting new information and insights into how we consider our urban environments, and progressing how we consider areas such as design, planning, policy, funding and infrastructure.

The Institute is a partner association for this inaugural NSW event organised by Consult Australia. Registrations open on 25 May.

The Office of the Government Architect (OGA) is a small, multi-disciplinary team of qualified design professionals which supports the NSW Government to create vibrant, connected and prosperous places for our people. The OGA has a high-level of experience in government and industry and draws on a range of disciplines, including urban design, architecture, landscape architecture and allied services. Our focus is on the design quality of the built environment and the public domain. We play a key strategic and advocacy role in providing independent advice that supports the success of NSW’s vision for its cities and communities.
